If you're planning to transfer your character from Tu Shanshu to the successor game at [community profile] khuioduan, we ask that you update your app to the new format to match incoming game applications. As we specified before, no current player who wishes to transfer over will be asked to re-app or participate in the reserve/app cycle to "get" their character - they are guaranteed for you.

There are two sections in the Khu Ioduan application form which are not on TS's, those being Suitability and Talent Choice. You will need to fill both of these in, but all the rest of the sections can be copy+pasted from your existing applications. Suitability should be a couple of sentences, and Talent Choice is just picking your top 3. There is no Setting section in the Khu app, just a place for reference links. You also do NOT need to fill out the CRAU sub-section of the app template unless your character was a CRAU into Tu Shanshu originally - moving from TS to Khu Ioduan is not treated as a CRAU.

(That said, if you WANT to update any of those sections, like revising Personality or rewording an Ability, that's fine. We're simply saying it's not required.)

Additionally, we are not requiring a new sample in order to complete this transfer form - you've all definitely written more than enough just by playing here. However, some people have expressed the desire to write your character's discovery and reaction that 566 YEARS have passed since they entered the Dreaming, and we encourage that! Please not that this is optional and there is no word count requirement on this if you choose to go with it.

TRANSFER CHARACTER TEMPLATE

Please have your application updated and posted TO THIS COMMENT prior to January 10, when the game's first application cycle goes live! If you cannot make this deadline, please contact the mods as soon as you can so we can work something out.

Finally, if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask us! We want this to go smoothly for everyone.

Hey Chelonauts! We have some announcements regarding major changes for the future of Tu Shanshu, so please read on.

We feel that the community has reached a crossroads of sorts with regards to the game’s sustainability, particularly in the last six months, and we know you've seen it too: there has been a drastic decline in activity, in plotting, and in our ability to attract new players to the game.

This isn't the result of one single fault or failing-- not the mods, not the players, not the plotting opportunities or people's creativity. A lot of it has to do with the age of the game (we passed our 5-year mark back in August), and some of it has to do with the fact that we as a game might have been trying to do too much at once, and be too many things.

But we love the overall setting of Tu Shanshu, and we know that there is a lot left that can be done with the worldbuilding that's in place, which is why we're introducing what the modteam feels is the best way to preserve all the best bits of Tu Shanshu, and yet give players both existing and potential a revitalization that we think the game needs in order to survive.

In light of that, we would like to announce that over the next few months, we will be tying off the story of Keeliai and Tu Vishan, and introducing a successor/spin-off game, called Khu Ioduan.

Below the cut, we've included the premise for the new game, as well as some of the core mechanics that will be in use. There's a lot of information in this post, and we ask that you give it all a read. We know that a change of this scale can be intimidating, especially to players who've been with us for years. We want to assure everyone that the modteam is fully committed to both this evolution, and to making sure our existing players are as comfortable as possible with the transition.

Below the cut is a lot of information... )

Hello chelonauts, it’s that time again!

It's been a few months since our last State of the Shell (Dec 2016) and we're happy to introduce some changes to the in-game structure to better facilitate plots going forward.

We've got some OOC structure changes to touch upon first - don't worry, nothing scary! First up, a mod-related change.

Hello chelonauts! It's the end of the year again, and time for a new State of the Shell.

As we wrap up 2016, there's been lots of development in the game and we as mods are thrilled that players have embraced the character consequence-driven style of play in TS. It's exciting for us to construct plots based on player's choices, and we hope it's enjoyable for you too!

GAME HMD

I'd like to invite players to also use this post for a GAME HMD: that is, to share your thoughts on how you feel this year has gone in regards to the running of the game, the plots and events (speed, content, etc) and to share any feedback that we as mods can use to improve running TuShanshu. We cannot overstate the benefit that player feedback plays in allowing us to run the best possible game for everyone, and any input (positive or negative) is valuable to us. As always, we allow anon/non-IP comments if you are more comfortable commenting that way.

PLOT SELECTION

As mentioned on the November itinerary, in the coming year we're looking to consolidate some of the ongoing plots that are presently running, as there are a lot of them! We're asking that players choose from the list below, their top three preferred plots to pursue starting in the new year, and to comment with those three choices (and any input you have on them!) to this post.

We want to assure everyone that the other plots are NOT being completely shelved, nor that the existing development on them will be lost! TuShanshu has always had a connected-web style of plots, particularly with the overarching metaplot, and we do enjoy the intricacy and hope you all do too! Instead, we're simply looking to not have quite so many plots on the go at the same time, which we feel will allow us to put more detail, more personalization, and the better involve more players, in the "active" plots. When one of these plots resolves itself, we'll simply roll into another one to take its place.

A WILD PLOT(S) APPEARS! )

That wraps up this State of the Shell! We didn't have any process changes this time around, but if you've noticed anything in the game that needs updating, please let us know.

Thank you for a fantastic year and we're looking forward to 2017!

Hello chelonauts! Li here, and I'm happy to announce the new additions to our modteam:

Rivers - player of Klaus Von Reinherz and Yorda
Makari - player of Raine Sage and China Sorrows
Seal - player of Pepper Potts

Everyone please join me in welcoming them to their new positions, and we appreciate your patience as we get everyone settled into their new duties, especially as some IC plots, groups and NPCs are going through some restructuring.

Hello chelonauts, we have an important announcement for you today regarding changes to the mod staff in the game.

Due to real life time commitments, Am and Pur will be retiring as mods and players, and will be stepping down effective the end of this month. Please join me in thanking them for their dedication, inspiration and enthusiasm over the last two years, especially in helping to develop the IC world after the game's reboot! Tu Shanshu would not be nearly as special a place nor as strong as community without their input.

Throughout the month, their NPC's involvement will be scaled back and/or phased out, in preparation for new NPCs to take on various roles within the game.

In light of this, we will be opening mod applications, starting now and running through until the 18th of July, with our decisions made by July 22nd. In order to maintain the current level of IC world building, plot development, and core post upkeep, we are seeking 2-3 additional mods. Due to the small size of the game, we're not looking for people to do only certain aspects of modding (that is, we're not looking for list mods versus app mods, etc), and so applicants should be aware that they'll be expected to participate in all of the mods' tasks.

Throughout the transition, Am and Pur will be around, and all three of us will be helping the new mod recruits get up to speed through the end of the month tasks, so they'll be able to see how itineraries are put together, how apps are handled, and all the fun behind the scenes things that keep this turtle swimming!

If you are interested in volunteering, please copy and fill out the form below and email it to tushanshu@gmail.com

Based on player feedback, we've created a Content Opt-Out comment on the Mod Contact page, where players can leave an auto-screened comment regarding topics that they don't wish to deal with in-game.

Please let us know of any problems going forward by replying to that post, or by PMing the mod account, or by emailing the general game gmail, also listed on that post.

Thank you.

Hello chelonauts! Today we're officially announcing some changes to the game regarding eligible characters.

Per our player survey, the results were overwhelmingly in favour of allowing both CRAU (game import) characters, and Canon OCs (fanon characters) to be allowed to app to Tu Shanshu. Based on the feedback that was provided by everyone who weighed in, we identified where people had concerns about both of these options, and we have put together what we feel is the most reasonable and thorough way to address these potential issues.

Below the cut, we'll go over the guidelines we've set for both of these types of characters, and we invite anyone who has further questions to let us know on this post, and we'll address them as promptly as possible. Additional examples have been added to the APPLICATION FAQ.

Canon OCs/Fanon Characters )

CRAU/Game Import )

Our application template now has some adjustments! We have added a simple "Character Type" line, for specifying canon character/original character/canon OC/CRAU, and at the bottom of the application, there are now separate addendum for both new types to fill out, to cover the above noted requirements. As with regular applications, the mods will continue to hold each app, regardless of character type, to an equal standard of believably across the board.

These changes go into effect immediately, although we may continue tweaking the wording of the examples as needed. Please let us know if you have any questions or need further information!

Hi again, chelonauts!

Based on feedback we received on the latest State of the Shell, we are considering accepting new types of characters, namely CRAU or game imports, and canon OCs (OCs based on an existing canon) as eligible characters to apply.

While we feel that there is precedent for it to happen ICly due to the changes with the Dreaming, because this is a potentially significant change, we want to first get the thoughts of our current playerbase before making any changes. Therefore, we're inviting all players to respond to this post using the form below, so that we can make an informed decision.

EDITED TO ADD: We also welcome non-members (or former members, or potential members, etc) to share their thoughts!

The exact guidelines for both types of characters would still need to be finalized if the voting results are in favour of either/both, so we highly encourage you to share your thoughts on both options as well as your vote.

All comments are screened! This vote will remain open until 11:59 EST, Monday January 18th.

SURVEY NOW CLOSED, thank you to everyone who participated!

Good morning chelonauts! Your mods have a surprise for you today: we've finally completed the overhaul and update of all the game's core posts. Tons of information has been added, updated, and relocated to make things easier to find, and to reflect all the changes that the game has undergone.

And we now have pictures!

We've also moved everything to the main mod journal as opposed to the OOC comm, so please update any bookmarks you have. Everything is now linked through the central navigation post HERE. The old core posts have not been deleted, but they've been moved to private status so that people can't accidentally use the old information.

Please have a look around and let us know what you think of the changes! If we've missed anything, broken links, spelling errors, forget a continent, that sort of thing, please drop us a comment here and we'll fix it up.

In addition, as outlined in the State of the Shell, we've completed the changes to the app template, which is now also in effect. We currently have three sample apps linked on the page, and will be adding more soon.

Enjoy!

ETA: In addition, the landfall at Tavimbi will be delayed by about a week, to give us time to do a properly detailed writeup for everything. In the meantime, drop by Klaus' post regarding getting additional help to complete the move ICly. :)

Hello chelonauts! Here is our long overdue State of the Shell post. It's been a wild ride over the past year since the new story arc of the game came into effect, hasn't it? Malicant's defeat, waking up into a new Keeliai, new alliances and discoveries!

We'll be summarizing the current status of some major plot points, which will hopefully give people lots of goals to tackle in the new year. We're also making a number of small process changes that will help the game run more smoothly.

And so without further ado:

Plot Recaps )

Process Changes )

We hope this gives everyone a solid feeling for where Tu Shanshu currently stands as we head into 2016!

As always, we welcome any thoughts and questions about anything in this post, and we'd like to take this opportunity for players to share their opinions on the past year's run of the game for plots, events, and how we've been doing as your moderators. Anonymous is available, if you're prefer that approach, but all of your feedback is truly invaluable, so please consider sharing!

And that brings us to the end of the State of the Shell. Happy turtling!

Hi chelonauts, Li here!

I really want to apologize for the sort of hot mess sporadic handling of the Chihuelan event this month, which I was in charge of, so this is on me. (Pur and Am have been graciously doing part of my work, whoops.)

Essentially, I planned too big a plot for too small a timeframe, and then I didn't take into account a lot of factors. As a result, there actually happened... very little, and what did happen, didn't factor in things that I should have allowed players better chance to react to.

In short: I bungled it! Just a little bit.

But that's okay, because we're a flexible game with lovely players, so what's going to happen ICly is: the Justicar received an emergency callback to Chihuelo, and spittingly mad as she is to leave something in the middle of it, she's a good soldier and is going home briefly.

OOCly, the mods have all agreed to take a step down breather for a few months, as we noted in the September itinerary. What this means is that we're temporarily shelving the Chihuelan plot, and switching the metaplot focus to elements already introduced, namely the sinking turtle, and to player plots for the remainder of this year. (October since it's almost already here, November so everyone's not trying to cram everything into October, and December because hello holidays and exams and no one wants to deal with plot things during that.) This will mean no landfalls between here and the new year, as well.

THAT SAID, we're not going totally slice of life during this period. There are lots of things already in the works that can be followed up on, and plot developments from reward requests are always an option. We're simply stepping back from the game-wide metaplot for a bit, so that everyone can have a bit of downtime, including us mods!

We're also going to be using this time to rework a lot of the core posts and game mechanics, which is something we've been trying to do since summer, and it keeps being shuffled back because of time constraints.

So that's where things are standing at the moment, but if anyone has questions/comments/concerns/etc, please leave them here. Anon is acceptable, if anyone wants to go that route as well.

Thanks all!

Greetings chelonauts and visitors! This is the OOC post for the second week of the fourth-wall event. General fourth-wall information can still be found on last week's information post, and sign-ins are still available here, but otherwise please refer to this post for any further questions or events.

Do feel free to continue tagging the first week's log and of course the Midnight Hotel log for all your non-festival needs, as well as any open logs or network posts dated during the 4th wall. (Most of them have the %4th wall tag added to them, those are all fair game!)

MYSTERIOUS INTERLOPERS - THE DREAMING DISCONNECTS | APRIL 22-30

Despite the reaction from the Foreigners, Tu Yunxu's post has left a mark on the kedan population. At first it only serves to bolster spirits -- finally some of the remaining invaders are being dealt with, finally the Snakes are fulfilling their promises!

But on the final days of the festival more and more kedan notice that there are shapes in the fields -- like crop-circles, but in the shape of Chihuelan insignias. The festival ends naturally, but parties of Woodsmen can also be seen investigating the outer edges of their lands, and everyone -- Foreigner and kedan alike -- are encouraged to return to the city and stay there. They will find leaving the city to be difficult for the next week, with Snakes on the inside of the gates and Woodsmen on the out.

For the next week matters are somewhat tense, with rumours abounding regarding the insignias in the fields and what they mean, and fear that the Chihuelan raiders may already be in the city. They look so much like most of the Foreigners, and they don't carry soul-gems. The primary defense the kedan have is in their shapeshifting; if the Chihuelans take that, the kedan fear, they'll have an even more superior edge.

For the next week anyone who looks human, but can't shapeshift and doesn't have a soul-gem is going to be the target of high suspicion. On occasion, even those who can shapeshift will have trouble -- a few brawls will break out among the kedan themselves, due to the suspicion, and it's not impossible that some Foreigners, both new and old, might be caught up in the action accidentally.

Aside from the above, there will be few instances of outright violence, thanks to the Snakes patrolling the city, but many of the fourth-wall visitors will find their patronage refused outright, or be harassed walking in the street. The Midnight Hotel and the construction of the Foreigners' quarters on the old palace land are the exceptions; the first is well known as a haven for everyone and the second is seen as an opportunity to keep Foreigners out of the way. Despite that, both places will be watched, though no kedan will make trouble in either.

Ironically, this means the Foreigners who live in the city long-term are more trusted. If the Chihuelans are after soul-gems to try and ingratiate themselves into the city, it obviously hasn't worked; all the soul-gems have been recovered, and therefore the recognizable Foreigners become the authority on who is really a Foreigner, temporary or not. Fourth-wall characters who have cast-mates or can otherwise use a permanent Foreigner as a character witness will have an easier time of things.

For the most part the attitude is one of staunch and unbending patriotism, and, continuing on the festival theme, renewal after a terrible era. The kedan feel that the two apprehended Chihuelans deserve what they got. There will be a constant crowd outside Yunxu's mansion, demanding justice and punishment for the Chihuelans he arrested. Every night there will be kedan going to Water Sector to put lit candles in the canals to represent those fallen during the invasion. It isn't an atmosphere of mourning; if anything, its one of fierce pride and hope in the future, and a sense that they will not be stopped.

By the end of the week the kedans' desire to be left alone by 'invaders' will have closed the rift that caused the new Foreigners to arrive in the first place, sending them all back home.

Hello chelos! Two quick things the mods would like to note as housekeeping items, please and thank you!

1. As mentioned last month on the Activity Check, in keeping with the game rules, tags are required on your posts and logs, whether being the 'post: character' or 'thread: character' respectively. Going forward, threads that are not tagged accordingly won't be eligible to use for AC towards your comment count. As mods, we use the comm tags to help us monitor the game, which in turn helps us make better events and plots for you guys. If you are having trouble with your tags not showing up, it's your responsibility to get in touch with the mods to let us know, so we can find the problem (like tags not appearing in the taglist, etc) and fix it for you!

2. Tangentially related to AC, we've also added a rewards request limit -- you guys are adding up AC points a lot faster than we were expecting (which is awesome), but we want to keep it fair. There is now a maximum of 4 rewards each per month, with only two of them being from the same category. Examples are listed on the rewards page itself.

EDIT 3: A request from Pur! I think there are a handful of characters staying at the Hotel who aren't OOCly checked-in. I'd like to remind people to do so; I will always OOCly make room for PCs in the Hotel, but because there are a limited number of one- or two-bed rooms and the Hotel is technically PC-run I need to know who is living where.

As always, any questions can be left here. Thanks guys!

Hello chelonauts, it’s that time again! This post and the log which will be going up shortly mark the beginning of TuShanshu’s new plot angle as decided in the July State of the Shell. This era of the game will be slightly more slice-of-life in that there is no driving metaplot like there was with Malicant, but will focus on world-building, exploration, and politics. The war is over--now it’s a chance for the Foreigners to define the world which they, and many others, inhabit.

We apologize, as this post is very lengthy! There was a lot of material to cover, and we are still working on some of the back-end changes such as converting the core posts to reflect all the new information.

But first, some mod-related changes.

Hello Chelonauts! As you know there are a lot of big changes happening with the game, a lot of big reveals that are coming to light and lots of exciting things still to come. This SOTS is meant to address the game between now and the end of the Malicant arc, where the plot will shift over to the new phase of the game. There will be another SOTS post made in January to bring people up to speed with all the changes, so we're not covering any of those facets with this one. (They are still, however, tentatively outlined HERE.)

Please bear with us, as this post contains a lot of info! We hope we've covered everything but if not, please drop us a note on this post and we'll try to answer any remaining questions.

Good morning, Chelonauts! Lis here, trying on Michelle Yeoh's face for the first time. It's a good fit. I like it.

I just wanted to give everybody a quick heads up that we'll be posting the June Mission Sign-Ups tomorrow, Monday the 9th. We're putting the final polish on the write-ups and everything will be revealed.

I also wanted to let everybody know that we're trying something a little different this month. I will personally be shepherding one of the missions, writing an NPC who will be fully involved in the movement of the story. We are also, as a whole mod team, going to be more deeply involved with the running of said missions, getting plot points out as fast as possible.

Basically, I'll be acting as your Dungeon Master. I have my D-20 all set up and everything. I'll be calculating THAC0 and shooting magic missile at the gazebo. There is a depleted uranium Beholder statue in my room right now. Can't move, being crushed by 11 hit-die aberration! (If anybody gets that reference, I'll be shocked.)

EDIT: Sorry, I made that sound like I was doing all the NPCs and all the missions. Too much wise-ass, not enough mod. Al and Kate and Li and I will ALL be very much involved with all the missions this month, and writing NPCs, etc.
