Game Changes: CRAU/Canon OC Apps
Hello chelonauts! Today we're officially announcing some changes to the game regarding eligible characters.
Per our player survey, the results were overwhelmingly in favour of allowing both CRAU (game import) characters, and Canon OCs (fanon characters) to be allowed to app to Tu Shanshu. Based on the feedback that was provided by everyone who weighed in, we identified where people had concerns about both of these options, and we have put together what we feel is the most reasonable and thorough way to address these potential issues.
Below the cut, we'll go over the guidelines we've set for both of these types of characters, and we invite anyone who has further questions to let us know on this post, and we'll address them as promptly as possible. Additional examples have been added to the APPLICATION FAQ.
Canon OCs/Fanon Characters
The biggest concern that came up for this type of character was that canon characters would have brand new relationships forced onto them-- for example, a character who was never canonically married suddenly having a husband or wife. We understand that this can be disruptive to a player, so we've limited canon OCs to either:
OR
CRAU/Game Import Characters
Our main concern was that game-imported characters would not be recognizable as their original canon selves, for which we came up with two means to help manage this.
AND
Our application template now has some adjustments! We have added a simple "Character Type" line, for specifying canon character/original character/canon OC/CRAU, and at the bottom of the application, there are now separate addendum for both new types to fill out, to cover the above noted requirements. As with regular applications, the mods will continue to hold each app, regardless of character type, to an equal standard of believably across the board.
These changes go into effect immediately, although we may continue tweaking the wording of the examples as needed. Please let us know if you have any questions or need further information!

Canon OCs/Fanon Characters
The biggest concern that came up for this type of character was that canon characters would have brand new relationships forced onto them-- for example, a character who was never canonically married suddenly having a husband or wife. We understand that this can be disruptive to a player, so we've limited canon OCs to either:
a) An OC which exists within the framework of the canon setting, but does not otherwise have a direct relationship to any canon characters. For example, a State Alchemist in the FMA fandom, or a duelist created as part of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise. The caveat here is that their creation or presence cannot alter the overall path of the canon itself, that is, a canon OC cannot stop the death of Ned Stark, because that would majorly change the canon and everything that follows.
OR
b) In order for a character to have a significant relationship to a canon character, that relationship must be canonically stated. For example, in MCU, Maria Stark is canonically the mother of Tony Stark, it's stated that she exists and there are a few scattered details, but not enough to qualify for a minor character app under the previous app setup. She would be appable now as a canon OC. However, Tony Stark does not have a sister in canon, so a canon OC Samantha Stark would not be accepted. This does not have to be a blood/familial relation, it does extend to characters which are mentioned in canon, but whom are not given detail beyond their existence.
CRAU/Game Import Characters
Our main concern was that game-imported characters would not be recognizable as their original canon selves, for which we came up with two means to help manage this.
a) A CRAU character can only be taken from a game universe where they were originally brought from their actual canon universe, such as a jamjar setting. Characters who were written as part of an AU setting will not be eligible under our CRAU rule. For example, Bruce Wayne could have been brought into a game where he learned how to firebend, would be acceptable. However an AU setting where Bruce Wayne was born into and grew up as part of the Fire Nation, would not be eligible.
AND
b) We have adjusted the application template slightly to reflect that, when applying for a CRAU character, we are asking for both the straight canon personality, and a separate section for any major changes that the character has undergone based on their time in the other game setting. This will help the mods ensure that the character in question is a reasonable progression from their canon selves to their CRAU selves, and prevent wildly OOC justifications, such as a passive, peaceful character going full-on genocidal (unless Euphemia li Britannia, in which case, it's canon. Sorry Euphie.)
