MISSIONS | May 2014
Hello Chelonauts!
As a result of the metaplot progression as outlined in May 2014 State of the Shell, Keeliai is now at war! With Malicant occupying the Palace, missions have temporarily taken on a narrowed and grim focus, as the Foreigners and NPCs of Tu Vishan try to combat the Enemy living literally in their own house. Remember that we also have a new monthly schedule for mission timeframes, meaning that they now run from the 15th to the 15th of the following month.
This month we have THREE prefabricated missions with plenty of opportunity still for player missions. We also have a comment header where you can suggest the sorts of missions you'd like to see in the months that follow! Feel free to be as succinct or not as you please, as we take these suggestions into account when creating the next month's missions based on this feedback as well as a comment for mission-related questions. Please don't hesitate to for more information or clarifications... we're still fine tuning everything to make sure players are able to get the most ICly and OOCly out of these missions.
MOD MISSIONS
Each month, a player can volunteer a character for up to three mod missions. Like other limited space elements in the game, we ask that each player only submit one character from their roster for the mod missions, though their other characters can be submitted for player missions, so long as it's one mission per character per month. To sign up, fill out the information below and choose your top three missions in order of preference. If there are more signups than available spaces for a mission, we will RNG characters into the slots. If your character isn't RNG'd into the first mission, they'll be added to the pool for the second mission, and so on for the third.
Mod missions will be tallied and their participants notified on the 11th of the month @ ~9:00PM EST. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that everyone who signs up a character for a mission will be chosen for one of the mod missions, as it is based solely on the number of signups for each one. In the event that your character isn't chosen for any of your three choices, you can still sign them up for a player mission before 9:00PM PST on the 14th.
This month's planned missions are as follows:
→ LANDED SKY (RECONNAISSANCE)
→ VENOM (EXPERIMENTATION)
→ HAZELWOOD (RESCUE)
PLAYER MISSIONS
Player missions can involve either just your character or a pre-planned group, or even have open signup! Once your mission is approved by the mods, including any clarifications or extra information needed, you're set for playing it out. Remember that the mission can take place at any point throughout the month. For convenience purposes, we've also created the %missions tag in the log comm and we'd be very appreciative if it could be added to mission logs when they get posted.
MISSION CREDITS
Each mission your character undergoes (threaded out with at least ten comments from your character, across any number of threads in the log) is worth a credit, and each handwaved mission is worth half a credit. Please note: only missions that you yourself come up with can be handwaved. The 'mod missions' are ones where participation is considered mandatory, as you are filling a limited slot. If we notice a trend amongst any one player of signing up for missions and leaving their mission-mates hanging, we will be speaking with them to determine a suitable outcome.
Mission credits can be claimed on the following month's AC post, where they will be confirmed by the mods and added to a spreadsheet for tracking.

MOD MISSIONS
LANDED SKY (RECONNAISSANCE)
Mission Duration: 1 month+
Mission Difficulty: ★★★★★
Mission Type: Infiltration and reconnaissance, with potential wetwork.
Projected Plot Impact: Putting characters in a position to have intimate details of what Malicant is doing/planning at the palace.
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: None immediate, but this could potentially assist with the overall offensive line.
Mission Restrictions: See the 'DOSSIER' section.
DOSSIER
Evandau will hand-select people who have shown a propensity for infiltration work in the past. He is only going to offer this mission to people he either knows have this type of training or who work damned hard to convince him of it. He will strongly prefer characters who are 18+ but will consider those that are younger if they can make a good case for it.
That settled, Evandau will hand several hand-drawn-up documents, as well as detailed information about the interior of the palace. This includes a working knowledge of how/when the passages and hallways move, the necessary countermeasures to all the booby-traps, etc. This information is considered EXTREMELY SENSITIVE and Evandau will tell your characters point-blank that if they divulge this information to others he will have them executed in a permanent sense of the word. (NOTE: that doesn't mean 'don't do it', it just means 'if you want to do it, do it carefully so that he doesn't find out and discuss potential consequences ahead of time).
The idea is that the characters will be granted the kedan shapeshifter abilities by Eva and will infiltrate the palace under whatever guises they deem most likely to succeed. This might mean working as one of Malicant's personal servants, a palace guard that's gone darkside, or some other cover. The cover is up to the characters, but of course they won't be expected to be in the palace 100 percent of the time as that would cut them off ICly and OOCly from the rest of the game. Characters can also pretend to all be the same individual (ie: everyone shapeshifts to look like Bob! and then take turns playing Bob in the palace) or separate entities.
The only drawback is that in order to successfully grant the Foreigners a believable enough disguise as kedan to fool Malicant, they'll have to wear these pendants which, while prevent their true natures from being known so long as they're worn at all times within the Palace's walls, also reduces any abilities above baseline down to approximately 20% strength. Additionally the pendants only last for around 5 weeks, though Eva can't tell them exactly when they'll expire due to the magic's inherent unpredictability.
OUTCOME
As this is potentially an ongoing mission over a longer period of time, the outcome is heavily dependent on what players choose to do with it. It will require a great deal of cooperation with whoever else is chosen for the mission (or your character can work independently of them, cooperation isn't mandatory). Characters chosen for this mission will be contacted with 2-3 pieces of information to discover inside the Palace (so please make sure your PMs are enabled on your character journals!) over the course of the month, and how players may choose how their characters wish to disperse this information.
This is a potentially critical mission that has the ability to get a great deal of information about how Malicant operates back to the majority of the foreigner population, and requires both initiative and coordination with the mods for it to reach its full potential. The focus of this mission isn't for the characters on the inside to necessarily attack (unless they're defending themselves, etc) but rather to become the eyes and ears for the rest of the Foreigners, and would be best served coordinating with any outside PC force as a sort of extra cover and means of taking scrutiny off these covert spies.

VENOM (EXPERIMENT)
Mission Duration: 3 days
Mission Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Mission Type: Experimentation
Projected Plot Impact: Seeking volunteers for Milyn to inject with Gha'nal venom to test the effects.
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: Provide a recount of the side effects of the venom, and see whether they have the desired effects in the various Planes.
DOSSIER
Since the capture and interment of the Gha'nal mother and cub, Milyn has been working on a way to refine its venom into something of an antibody for travel between the various Planes: Life, Dreaming and Death. As the Gha'nal are able to do this freely, it's hoped that Foreigners and eventually kedan will be able to build enough adaption to the concoction to manipulate these realms, even if in a limited fashion.
She will explain that the Dreaming Plane is the easiest to reach and thus the easiest to influence, and that the first injection should be enough to take their consciousness them there while their bodies remain in the healer's care. Since many people found themselves wandering into portals leading to both Dreaming and Death while in Sinbrilee, some may already be familiar with the way that these realms draw on a person's desires or fears, respectively. While Milyn will prefer those who have that experience from Sinbrilee, this is strictly a volunteer undertaking and it's not required.
She will give them a list of simple tasks for them to test their control of the realms. They will be things like, "grow a flower from the ground", "see if you can change the weather", "make an object float", etc and how successful characters are at completing these tasks is up to their player.
After 24 hours, Milyn will give them a second injection which should push them from Dreaming to Death. She will emphasize that they must, must be careful! in that place. The goal of Death is merely exploration and observance, but not to draw attention to themselves. Since the Planes shape themselves to whoever is in them, it's hoped that finding a common theme between the various visits to Death will yield key information about Malicant's control of it.
On the third day, Milyn will inject them with a final injection which will bring them back to the Life realm, and continue to monitor them for side effects.
OUTCOME
Characters chosen for this plot will have a write-in for them to experience in either Dreaming or Death, to be randomized, along with a list of aftereffects once they're brought into the Life realm again. Potential benefits of this are obviously bringing usage of the other Planes to bear against Malicant. Players are free to choose if and how characters disperse the information they've discovered from this mission.
PLOTTY PLOTS
HAZELWOOD (RESCUE)
Mission Duration: 2 days
Mission Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Mission Type: Rescue
Projected Plot Impact: Locating and rescuing Lieuen, who has been taken by Malicant cultists and being held.
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: Saving a key city figure who might possess valuable information that could be falling into the wrong hands.
DOSSIER
Evandau looks grim as he calls the small group of characters into a closed room in the police station. His new Commander, the stern woman Celaunn, will stand against the back wall with her arms folded over her chest, listening but not interrupting. Evandau will explain that he's been trying to get in contact with several key people within the city to reestablish his connections but he's been unable to located Lieuen, the Hazelwood Merchant. While not holding a position of military bearing, the Emperor suspects very strongly that Lieuen, through the man's extensive connections within Keeliai, knows a good deal of the Palace's secrets as well as many of Evandau's safe houses around the city, which include caches of weaponry both mundane and magical -- information that could drastically and fatally compromise any kind of city-based rebellion for taking back the Palace from Malicant.
Thus his not being found is highly suspect and concerning. Moreso is the policekedan's reports of signs of breaking and entering at Lieuen's residence, with several signs indicating it was done by the cultists which have risen to prominence since Malicant's occupation of the Palace. Celaunn will speak up then and provide the characters with a list of three known safehouses which have the highest probability of Lieuen being kept there. Increased activity at all three locations, coupled with the sudden fearlessness of the cultists at being discovered, seems to have shifted whatever they're doing into high gear.
Since she's unable to provide an accurate count of how many hostiles they might encounter, Celaunn would prefer to send a small group to each location simultaneously, to prevent one from warning another. If asked what to do with any cultists they do come across, the new Commander will icily point out that they're terrorists and that the Emperor has no current access to the prison anyway. The focus is on retrieving Lieuen and discovering what, if any, information he has revealed to the enemy.
OUTCOME
Depending on sign ups, three teams of either 2, 3 or 4 characters will be sent to each of the cultist dens. A further writeup of each location will be added once the groups are set. Results will be randomized between the three so that one group will find Lieuen and the other two will find information specific to the immediate plot (so everyone will get something relevant and useful!). Players can decide how their characters get into the locations (whether full frontal attack, luring the cultists away, sneaking in, etc) and what they would want to do with any prisoners, should the situation arise.

PLAYER MISSIONS
TEEN TEAM #1: LIBRARY
Player: Kate & Zak → Joanna, Otter, & Kiki
Character(s) & Journals: Ava (
Mission Duration: One day
Mission Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Mission Type: Infiltration
Projected Plot Impact: The team will learn information about the palace's conditions, possibly secrets about history, the city, magic, etc. Those involved with this mission may receive scrolls/etc (though nothing is guaranteed).
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: No direct impact, but a further understanding of Malicant, Tu Vishan, and other such knowledge in general.
Characters on this mission will be attacked on the tail end of their exploration. The result of this attack - whether characters escape successfully, are injured, or are killed - is up to each player regarding their respective character.
More detailed information will be provided soon, courtesy of Li, but you guys will be responsible for the creation of your own log. The log must be created and tagged at least once by each party to receive at least the half-credit given to handwaved missions.
Please note that this mission will occur on the same IC day as the other TEEN TEAM and ADULT palace missions, which will be provided as soon as we know what it is.

MISSION SUGGESTIONS
TEEN TEAM TEAM-UP
adding capitals makes it sound more legit). Al has generously offered to write the missions up for all others involved in the plot (not in the teen team team-up) and will be posting those as soon as she's able.To try to make this as fair as possible, Zak and I have written up 4 missions specific to the teen group (with mod approval!). Similar to the mod missions, we ask that you please reply with the top three choices for your character. Unlike the mod missions, we will not RNG to determine the groups, but assign them based on ooc preferences, encouraging new CR, and what makes sense icly.
Please specify, with your top three choices, if you have any preferences ooc or ic that would help us to know where to place them (i.e. Hayley's not a fighter so inside would be better; Annabeth wants to be with Frank or Nico; and so on). We will do our best to accommodate all preferences.
Note that the fourth mission is a guaranteed fail; if not enough people are interested in that mission, we'll create a duplicate of the third with slight differences in terms of what information each team might learn.
ESHAI
Player: Kate & Zak
Character(s) & Journals: 2-3 TBD
Mission Duration: One day
Mission Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Mission Type: Infiltration
Projected Plot Impact: The team will learn information about the palace's conditions, possibly Eshai's secrets, etc. Those involved with this mission may receive magic items (though nothing is guaranteed).
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: No direct impact, but a further understanding of the former Emperor and Malicant in general.
LIBRARY
Player: Kate & Zak
Character(s) & Journals: 2-4 TBD
Mission Duration: How long will it take ICly? Is it happening on specific IC dates?
Mission Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Mission Type:
Projected Plot Impact: The team will learn information about the palace's conditions, possibly secrets about history, the city, magic, etc. Those involved with this mission may receive scrolls/etc (though nothing is guaranteed).
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: No direct impact, but a further understanding of Malicant, Tu Vishan, and other such knowledge in general.
GUARD RESCUE
Player: Kate & Zak
Character(s) & Journals: 2-4 TBD
Mission Duration: One day
Mission Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Mission Type: Rescue, massacre, interrogation, etc- TBD
Projected Plot Impact: Characters involved with this team will have the choice of killing, apprehending, or interrogating possessed guards and/or servants of the palace (up to 10). Depending on their actions, characters might learn a great deal about Malicant's possessive influence and possibly even how to interrupt it.
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: Again depending on the choices the characters make, it could impact the future of Malicant's ability to possess other characters and/or how those possessions might be dealt with.
ATTACKED
Player: Kate & Zak
Character(s) & Journals: 2-4 TBD
Mission Duration: One day
Mission Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Mission Type: Combat fail
Projected Plot Impact: Characters involved with this team will attempt to infiltrate the palace and/or apprehend guards, but will be caught by a larger force. These characters will be attacked and their mission will fail.
Proposed Worldbuilding Changes: No direct impact, but a further understanding of the conditions of the palace.
