LANDFALL, APRIL 7th-13th
Greetings and Salutations, brave Chelonauts! This here is the heralding post of our SECOND In-game landfall, and as with the last time I ask that you please read it over carefully, as it will have some changes to IC gameplay. This is an 'opt in' plot rather than an 'opt out' plot. Characters who remain on Keeliai will have a few things to do or react to as well!
● The continent itself is called Chihuelo, but Atam is the only city on the coast, and although it's opened to the sea there are high, thick walls that surround it in a semi-circle. The walls are roughly four stories high, and they're an iridescent black, with a sharp greenish sheen that becomes more active when people are near it. The wall itself is electrified, but the question is – is it meant to keep people in? Or out?
● The city itself is a large one, but it isn't densely populated. With maybe twenty thousand people, it's a tightly run ship. Nearly everyone is or seems to be in uniform, and they'll all be tense and on their guard, although conversation with them is affable enough. They have personalities that are far more individualistic and distinct than the kedan. These people appear to be human, and for the duration of this event the 'rule of tens' is not in effect as far as ALLIES goes – so if you wish to befriend several of the people in this city, feel free, and it won't count towards your overall game tally of 'ten' npc allies. However, if your character chooses to go on a killing spree, the rule of ten will still apply (although if your character has, say, killed three kedan and chooses to kill eight residents of Atam, it won't add up. But if your character chooses to kill ten people in Atam, please ping us and let us know because that starts having larger in-game ramifications).
● There is no crime in the city, and if your character is curious as to why there is a Central Stockade, a city block's worth of open space is fenced off directly in the heart of Atam where there are a set of gallows, stocks, whipping blocks and other interesting devices that are more commonly found in medieval torture chambers. Nothing looks like it's been used in recent memory, but at each of the four gates into the stockade there is a note pinned to the post with a list of names. The higher names on the list are etched in black, the lowest ones in red. If asked about it, the citizenry will become extremely uncomfortable and change the topic. It's also worth noting that there are no prisons in Atam.
● There are also no children in Atam.
● Supplies are available, although they will be costly. This includes guns and weaponry, far and above what the kedan are capable of producing for themselves – roughly on par with 'present day' Earth. However, they are extremely expensive. If your character has a hankering for a nice piece of hardware, perhaps they're of a mind to steal it... although if caught, there will be consequences. We won't be policing what characters can and cannot purchase, but please try to be reasonable. If your character has been in Keeliai for less than a few weeks, they won't have amassed the money necessary to buy an entire armoury. Use your own discretion, and if you have any questions feel free to ask me (me being Roy)!
● Food is available as well. It's quite plentiful here, although most of it is quite bland. They have no 'fresh' produce of any sort, but they have canned or tinned vegetables and fruit in abundance. Again, it's quite expensive, so please watch your funds. Any bread available in Atam is hard, flat and dry. They do produce alcohol, so for those characters that are in the unfortunate state or process of a detox, there's a good chance they'll be able to secure some product. Most of the alcohols would be grain based, so expect anything in that vein. They also have a very fine brand of tobacco.
● As for luxury items - there are some books available in Atam. Mostly they appear to be field manuals for branches of the Chihuelan military. They have maps of the continent available as well, which paint a picture of Chihuelo as a large and densely populated continent. There are no toys or anything of that nature available, and any luxury food items such as chocolate, etc, are also not in common supply.
● There is almost nothing here that suggests 'magic' of any sort. No glowing consoles (and no access to them, for anyone who wants to get into the city and make a network post!) and nothing that can't be strictly explained by science. It has indoor plumbing, green houses aplenty. The only point of curiosity seems to be the wall around the outskirts of the city itself.
● While in the city, the 'foreigner' population are not allowed to leave and return as they wish. If they enter Atam once, their papers will be stamped and once they leave, that's it, they won't be allowed back into the city (unless they try to forge their paperwork and/or change their appearance, and if anyone would like to do that we'll roll a dice to see if they succeed or fail at that endeavour!). If your character wishes to stay in Atam for the duration of landfall, they will be provided (at a cost) a bunk in a communal house. For those that like their privacy, well... let's just say it's not high priority to the people of Atam.
● Mostly, the city can be summed up by saying that it's 'utilitarian'. The uniforms are no-nonsense, the food is no-nonsense. The architecture is plain and unpretentious. The people seem hard-working without being downtrodden or outright oppressed.
● As with the landfall on Vailequios, the mainland 'nerfs' powers. That means that any character that is accustomed to flying, using super speed, or any other such 'extranormal' ability (excepting those necessary to survive – ie: Santo is a giant rock, but the mainland will not render him immobile) will be significantly muted, although not necessarily altogether gone.
● The weather in Atam is extremely tempestuous. It can be lush and sunny one moment, with highs up to 30 degrees Celcius or 86 degrees Farenheit, and the next minute it can be hailing and inclement. Again, this is a matter of player discretion. If you want to say your character was caught in a freak blizzard or storm, feel free to do so without checking with us.
● Any items that were requested for this landfall will be located within the city itself, either in a shop of some sort of even out in the streets. If your request was a sentient animal, feel free to say it's been terrorizing the locals, eating garbage, making off with livestock, that sort of thing. Trust me, the residents will be glad to have them gone.
● IN TERMS OF WHAT YOUR CHARACTER CAN BRING BACK: There are restrictions on certain items, such as liquor and weapons. If your character was in Atam for only a day, they'll only be able to bring eight ounces of alcohol back. If they stayed for the full week, they'll be permitted rather more than that. The same goes for any weapons and even food to an extent. And characters will be searched as they come back through customs to Keeliai. Anyone feel like smuggling contraband? Here's your chance. Is it more efficient to run an organized smuggling cartel? Or perhaps your character's a little more lone wolf?
● For anyone curious about the wall, or interested in getting over it, it is possible, but it should be noted that touching the wall delivers a fatal electrical impulse to the body. Getting over the wall is the sort of thing that would take ingenuity, teamwork and hard work. And there are some potential negative consequences involved, so please look before you leap.
● ADDITIONALLY: The EMPEROR will be in Atam during this time. If you'd like to track her down and speak with her there, please let me know and we can try to arrange it. I warn you, though, she's going to be cranky as all hell. And it should doubly be noted that the power nerfing doesn't only affect the PCs...
IN KEELIAI:
● The kedan are becoming more and more aggressive and intolerant of the Foreigner presence. Threats of violence are beginning to come not only from the gangs but from every day kedan on the street, sometimes for an act as simple as happening to bump into them. They're also, as a whole, becoming less servile. They're angry about the rationing and what they perceive as the 'lion's share' being given to the foreigners, and they're beginning to resent the fact that the foreigners were brought here to 'save' them but have so far done nothing but consume their resources. Many foreigners will find that their work hours have been cut or that they've been dismissed altogether.
● During the week in which Tu Vishan will be docked at Atamsichar, the police force will be enacting a curfew in Keeliai. Anyone caught out after hours will be fined – but these fines, rather than being monetary ones, will instead require food or other resources. (Ie: Being out half an hour after curfew requires your week's bread ration, being out two hours after curfew requires that and your milk-ration).
● The Emperor's away. Well, isn't that just a perfect opportunity to create a little mischief up at the Palace...
● ADDED AS OF 04/01 For the Atlanteans in our midst! Come on in, the water's great! The fish are happy and well cared for, the water is tropical (which goes for any beach bunnies in our midst, not just the fish people!) There's also the ruins of an approximately iron-age city sunk just off the coast for anyone who can swim to explore! It's visible about four meters down. It's mostly old buildings, walkways/etc, that are covered in ocean detritus. Some things could be brought back to the surface. Maybe you'll even find old treasure? Who knows! Have fun exploring.
As usual, feel free to use this post to plot amongst yourselves, and there will be a comment header for any questions you might have. Please field all questions/concerns/etc to Roy, either here or over at
vonnerdyce!
Also, if we find this event needs to run a bit longer so people can accomplish things in a less constrained timeframe, that's also cool, we're going to take a look at how the event's sitting a few days in and make a decision then, but we'd also love to hear your opinion in the meantime!
AND AS A REMINDER: ITEM REQUESTS are still open for this landfall! We will be compiling the requests and adding them to this page in a few days, you will have until WEDNESDAY the 3rd to get your requests in and have them count for this round!
You disembark from Tu Vishan to a clean, well-kempt port. There are a fair amount of ships here, and though they're dwarfed in size and scope by Tu Vishan, miraculously none are capsized. Everything is almost militaristically organized, and there are officials posted at intervals along Tu Vishan's docked side checking paperwork as people disembark (said paperwork is official documentation of your character's stay in Keeliai, it will be delivered to your character's suite a few days before they make landfall) It's standard procedure, they explain. There will be a mandatory quarantine period of up to twelve hours for anyone trying to gain access to the portside city of Atamsichar. This quarantine involves your character being stripped, hosed down, their blood tested and a period of isolation while their bloodtests are checked for anything particularly nasty. Rest assured, unless you've been engaging in sex with corpses, you're probably fine.
