I don't really have a preference for Costigan, I don't know much about his canon at all.

He's a Bostonian who tries to become a police officer, but they put him undercover instead and he works for an evil dude (based on the real life notorious gangster Whitey Bulger) and has to do shady things while trying to help pass along evidence to get the guy arrested.
