break out the teal deers!

THE CR TL;DR MEME

HOW IT WORKS:

1. List your character(s)!
2. Others respond with "what does your character X think of my character Y?" or some variation.
3. Respond to them! Break out those teal deers!
4. Generate some discussion about your CR!
5. PROFIT!

Barnaby was like, "WHAT EVEN" because he had never met anyone who was so adamant that hero work should be done without a paycheck. Where he comes from, that stuff is a legitimate career choice, and doing hero work along with a separate, paying job doesn't sound very wise to him. He was especially taken aback by the acknowledgment that scientists and medical personnel should get paid for helping people, which was then promptly coupled the assertion that heroes shouldn't. Even his partner Kotetsu doesn't take his old-fashioned ideas of heroism that far, so that is kind of an impressive feat to Barnaby, LOL.

Consequently, Jaime strikes Barnaby as pretty young and naive, guided more by lofty personal ideals, rather than the reality of a given situation.

On the other hand, Barnaby recognizes that they come from two very different places. Maybe it just wasn't necessary for mutants to need an image overhaul in Jaime's world, which would mean no Hero industry. Barnaby also wonders if this "pro bono" attitude is widespread where Jaime comes from, or if it's just a result of his age. Whatever the case may be, Barnaby knows he probably doesn't have the whole picture, so he doesn't actively dislike Jaime or anything like that (although, it actually takes a lot for Barnaby to actively dislike anyone, since his default mode is "detached indifference"). Plus, Jaime seemed willing to at least hear him out on the logic behind the Hero industry, which is never a bad thing in Barnaby's book.

Also, he may have caught wind that Jaime tried to help Kotetsu out of his suit, in which case Barnaby would want to check to see how much of an ass Kotetsu made of himself while Jaime dealt with him, and handle any damage control, hahah.

I THINK THAT'S ALL...

Despite the name, Barnaby doesn't quite think of Loki as a legit god just yet, but he's picked up on the fact he isn't like most children. Although it would be easy for Barnaby to describe Loki as an eccentric, he feels like there's probably more to the story than what's on the surface.

Congratulations, though! The moral relativist in Barnaby actually found his conversation with Loki pretty refreshing. Ever since coming to the turtle, he's run into quite a few people who clutch their pearls at the thought of a sponsored superhero, so the fact Loki just rolled with it from the get-go was a nice change of pace.

So basically...he doesn't entirely know what to think of you, Loki, (aside from the fact you're a giant troll) but he's okay with that for now.

They can bond over the fact that pearl clutchers are endemic to the turtle.

Oh, Kotetsu. You dear, sweet, infuriating man.

From the very beginning, Barnaby knew you had the frightening capacity to turn his world upside down, which was the main reason he was so cold toward you. Of course, he could only keep his walls up for so long before you smashed them to pieces just like you break everything else while you're on the job, amirite, and now a life without you sounds like no life at all.

Dude, Kotetsu, you are like...the only person alive Barnaby cares about. And in Barnaby's book, "cares about" is usually synonymous with "loves, trusts, and adores 110%", because Barnaby doesn't half-ass anything, least of all relationships.

His feelings are so intense that there was even a time when he was blind to all of your faults, man. That is a serious level of infatuation right there. He may have snapped out of that "love is blind" phase after awhile, but he's still around, isn't he? That's because, on top of loving you, he understands what makes you tick, including a lot of your insecurities, and why you make dumb decisions. Of course, that doesn't make said dumb decisions any less frustrating, but Barnaby understands you aren't being a dick for the sake of it most of the time, and he wants to provide you with the support and security you need.

There are still a lot of things he feels guilty about, things he wishes he had done better when you were at your lowest point, even things he wishes he could do better now, and sometimes he wonders if he even deserves you. But Barnaby knows those kinds of thoughts aren't productive in the long run, so he's more interested in focusing on what he can do to make your partnership stronger. Whether it's as colleagues, friends, or maybe even something more intimate, being near his precious partner is Barnaby's highest priority. ♥

Barnaby still isn't used to meeting superheroes from other worlds, especially ones that are so far removed from the economic model he's used to. But, Mark was at least willing to hear him out instead of quickly dismissing the realities of Barnaby's world, so he strikes Barnaby as someone who might have a good head on his shoulders.

Since he's so new to turtle land, Barnaby realizes there's a chance he may have to receive assistance from other foreigners, especially people with powers or combat experience. So, he believes it's in his best interest to stay polite in order to maintain somewhat amicable relationships with other people, which means that will likely characterize his future interactions with Mark.
