a mission board?! sometimes doc can do a thing.

Doc here, announcing that both Qilby ([personal profile] traitre) and I are back from NYCC. And although I had a blast, I also vastly overestimated how much downtime I'd have, so this plot post did not go up on Saturday as I'd originally predicted.

But I'm back now and ready to talk about this fun thing I'm pretty excited about! And I hope everyone else will be excited about it too! So, without further ado, I introduce this little player-run mission board that I'm going to be handling in the months to come…

What is it?
Things in Keeliai need doing and, as a king, Qilby's got the chops to sit around all day and tell people to do them.

But seriously, he's got it in his kingly head to manage a sort of "adventurer's guild." Foreigners who've wanted to help out in the kedan community but didn't really know how will now have a way to make a real, tangible impact in the city. By acting as a liaison between his kedan contacts and Foreigners, Qilby's the guy that'll let them know what to do and when and where-- just like one o' them RPG questgivers.

As common as it is in other DW games, everyone's probably familiar with the idea-- but to again frame it like a video game, these are basically side quests. Whenever you feel like grabbing another player and throwing your characters in a situation together, you two can pick up a mission. These have the added benefit of providing an in-game monetary reward, plus your characters'll be helping to strengthen kedan-Foreigner relations! What's not to love?!

How is it going to work?
I'll be keeping a permanent post in my character journal for mission listings and sign-ups. When possible, these will be plot-sensitive so they'll always reflect the changing current of the game. Did someone's super-powered character accidentally wreck a building? Well then maybe the exotic zoo next door got damaged as well, and they'll need someone to round up all their horrible blood-sucking animals. Oh yeah, the thought excites me too.

After taking a mission, all participating players are expected to show the results in a log or action post or what have you. It only takes one character to apply for a mission, but essentially there will be two characters involved. After all, if you're going to log this, you can't just play it out by yourself! That being said, two players don't have to consciously arrange to take the mission together -- you're free to apply for a mission, create an open log for it, and let other characters stumble in and help at their leisure.

These missions are non-repeatable, or in other words, once a group's taken a mission, a second group can't come in and apply for the same one. But never fear, a new list will go up at the beginning of the month so there'll always be jobs to go around!

What do my characters get out of it?
Upon completing a mission successfully, characters will receive a monetary reward usually ranging upwards of 50 juulan (or $250.) Rewards are scaled with the assumption that two characters will be receiving the money one way or another. How the reward is divided is up to the players, and subsequently their characters.

In addition, many kedan clients will offer an additional reward -- helping a weaponsmith may net you a neato new weapon, or helping a spidersmith may get you a handful of spiders. I just made up the part about the spidersmith, but you get the idea.

So what else can I do with this?
I love bouncing plot ideas back and forth, so if you have a plot in the works that I can "promote" through the mission board, or if you just ever have any suggestions for potential jobs, please let me know via PM to this journal or at ornithophobic(at)gmail(dot)com! I'm going to do my best to monitor all the goings-on in the game and reflect them in the missions I create, but I can always use the help.

So that's how it's going to be. This month, however, is going to be a little bit bigger -- I'll be kicking off this whole thing with a mini-plot and a bang! As a result of Fran and Balthier's canoodling with the local gangs, a bit of a war is going to break out between two of the larger gangs operating out of the Earth and Metal Sectors: the Shailo and the Ur, respectively.

Since Evandau and the police force are going to be busy dispelling the larger conflicts, it'll be a good opportunity for a trial by fire through the operation Qilby's only just begun to set up. Those boys at the turtle police are going to need all the help they can get.

A network post and kickoff log will go up on October 19th, and the conflicts will last through the 22nd before being successfully quelled by the police and proactive Foreigners. Anyone who has characters living in the Earth and Metal Sectors and who decide not to participate in the event will notice an obvious effect in the shadier parts of either area, but otherwise should not need to experience anything their players don't wish them to. Similarly, people who want their characters to get in on gang war action but don't want to do it through this mission board are free to do so (but consider plotting with characters who are, at least!)

Again, feel free to refer to the completed list of missions here, and start signing up early! The rest of this post may be used for plotting, looking for characters to take up missions with, and any questions you may have.

Sorry. A lot of nonsense came up. So like I said... one million years later... if you're the only one who signed up and would be two, who would be playing the second character? Are you going to?

Oh, I get what you're saying now. So we NPC like the eccentric dude or the person that we're trying to intimidate? Just to be sure.

I was just scared to rock the boat!
