How's My Driving | July 2013

Three months have already passed since the last HMD? You betcha! This means that it's time to kick off the fourth quarterly gamewide HMD here in Tu Shanshu! Things are getting structured a little differently this time, so read on for details.

How's My Driving?
While each and every character must have an HMD page available, we offer a gamewide HMD once every calendar quarter. This is an opportunity to get together and discuss IC interpretations and portrayals in a respectful, beneficial fashion. In a nutshell, it's a chance to see how we're doing in the grand scheme of things.

There are a few ground rules to cover off before we can start:

  • Participation in the quarterly HMD is 100% optional.
  • Be respectful, anon or not. It's a lot easier to give and receive crit if all parties are making it a discussion of it rather than an argument.
  • IP logging is off and anonymous commenting is on. You can offer crit signed-in if you like, but the option's there.
  • New! We ask that each concrit provided consist of one positive and one constructive bit of feedback. Bring up something that you like about that player, and in the same comment provide something that you feel they could work on. This is to help round out the feedback and provide a better experience all around.

That's it, that's all!

And, to make things easier, here's a handy-dandy codeset:

One tip for juggling time with RP that I've taken to doing is setting myself a minimum amount of time spent on tags for the day. Trying to do a minimum number of tags can be daunting (at least, for me, given the amount of prose logs I tend to get into), so time is a more approachable goal. I typically pick something I would consider very low for me, maybe an hour, and I just sit down and shut everything else and do one solid hour of nothing but tagging. As long as I achieve my hour, that's all I needed to do, regardless of "amount" done.

idk if that would work for you but I thought I'd toss it out there since I've been thinking about that lately myself. XD

No, that does help. I have the same issue and propensity for tl;dr in all of my tags. What I think I need to do and just haven't yet is shut everything else off and focus solely on tags so I can think and create properly.

By the way, this is completely unrelated, but I've been eyeing your Bruce Banner for awhile, and though I have been intentionally keeping my thread count a little low so I can stay on top of them all, I would really like to play with you sometime.

Yeah, I've installed a couple browser extensions that block specified websites and that's helped me a lot, lol. It's just tough when you try to tackle longer tags, because it can really take the wind out of you quickly and prevent you from getting through your inbox. And then when you mostly have longer tags... yeah. Haha.

I've love to do something with you! Let me know when you're ready to take new things on? I actually haven't ever seen or read Les Mis (I know, gasp) but I've loved seeing Javert around. He's such an unusual character to have in a game and you've clearly put a lot of thought into him.

Those browser extensions sound like a good idea. I tend to get trapped in a web of food blogs, and then I just get hungry and an itch for baking lots of pretty and delicious things.

And... Eh, Les Mis isn't for everyone unless you like massive melodramatic tears, ridiculous tangents about sewers and the Battle of Waterloo, and lots of death. (For the record, I am of the 'Victor Hugo is ALWAYS Unintentionally Hilarious' camp when it comes to my canon) I do my best to make Javert as accessible as possible for people who know the canon and people who don't. I'm flattered that you've taken a look around at what he's doing! I know I'm a little bit hard to catch lately, but I hope to pick up the pace when my life settles back into a routine.

RE: Things to do ICly with Bruce and Javert, I know that Bruce spearheaded the hydroponics garden. I had it in the back of my head that in cases of questions about food/rationing, Javert would know to refer people to this garden project, since he does regularly troll the network bulletins for information. Are there any rumors of a big green meanie drifting around yet? ;-) These are all just things I'd like to keep in mind as the game progresses, so when they do meet face to face we can kick it off with something interesting.

Though tbh I'd love for Javert's first experience with Bruce to be HULK HULK HULK because I am the devil and it amuses the hell out of me. I can dream on while we wait for the return of powers.

The browser extensions are awesome! There's also a program called Self-Restraint (PC) or Self-Control (Mac) that will do something similar, where you specify a length of time it'll block certain websites, and there is NO way to access them or turn it off before the time is up. It's been great for getting homework done. xD

Yeah, I'm a little resistant to melodrama in general so that's probably why I haven't seen it. I've listened to the soundtrack, though, cause I love singing, and that was awesome. But I do completely agree that you can't take your serious characters too seriously. LOL. I try to make fun of Bruce as often as possible, because otherwise it gets ridiculous.

I have definitely see you around and I thought the stuff with tattling to the Emperor looked fantastic! Javert can definitely have heard of the Hulk because he was around during the satellite crash smashing shit up all over the place. He was also directly responsible for the deaths of three kedan NPCs, so if you wanted to do any sort of repercussions for that, I would love it. Bruce's guilt issues are never ending and can always be dived into more.

I'm not sure when next he'll Hulk out even after powers are over. XD He's done it twice so far in game and is feeling pretty disgruntled with it, but he's trying to actively work on control now so he will definitely have to do it again (willingly) at some point. I'll let you know!

I am still planning on tattling to the Emperor. It's scheduled to occur after this event, along with the Iorveth stuff that will be forthcoming.

If you would like to play out some repercussions for murder, I'd be glad to oblige. Javert does not precisely have the power to outright arrest people... not yet. And he still feels uncomfortable exercising that kind of authority considering his past life. But he is under an obligation to report criminals when he is certain about them. Once the Malicant event settles down we can completely look into that. Perhaps Javert is privy to a few police/enforcement files about at-large criminals and/or unsolved cases that he occasionally chooses to look into. It's his kind of thing, to chase a mystery for fun! And he is completely aware that the enforcement services are over inundated and stretched after all the recent debacles.

As for when he'll Hulk out again, not a big deal if it's not in the stars. I imagine it'd get redundant to play up the Hulk transformations too many times! The murder repercussion issue sounds really fabulous, though, and I think we can work on something really fun if we choose to pursue that angle.

(Excuse the journal...)

I figured it was still on the table. Be assured I will stalk it and enjoy. :3

That would be fantastic. Bruce usually gets to scoot out of town and not have to deal with the real repercussions-- I mean, he feels the guilt and responsibility so intensely there's no question that he doesn't get off scott free. But he certainly doesn't have to face any kind of authoritative response, ever, and his natural dislike of police, military, and other officials will complicate this. Because he does feel like it's his fault, so he won't "plead" not guilty, that's for sure, but he also doesn't think there's anything that can effectively be done punitively to him that won't just endanger more people?

So it's absolutely a complicated topic rife with potential. I've mostly handwaved the details about the deaths themselves, but that means we can fill in the blanks as would make sense for Javert to investigate. Some giant green monster angrily tearing up the city and accidentally causing some deaths while fighting specters is without a doubt something he could notice and look into! We can figure out the details of what he'd find after the depowering plot is over?
