How's My Driving | July 2013
Three months have already passed since the last HMD? You betcha! This means that it's time to kick off the fourth quarterly gamewide HMD here in Tu Shanshu! Things are getting structured a little differently this time, so read on for details.
How's My Driving?
While each and every character must have an HMD page available, we offer a gamewide HMD once every calendar quarter. This is an opportunity to get together and discuss IC interpretations and portrayals in a respectful, beneficial fashion. In a nutshell, it's a chance to see how we're doing in the grand scheme of things.
There are a few ground rules to cover off before we can start:
That's it, that's all!

In a nutshell, it's a chance to see how we're doing in the grand scheme of things.
There are a few ground rules to cover off before we can start:
- Participation in the quarterly HMD is 100% optional.
- Be respectful, anon or not. It's a lot easier to give and receive crit if all parties are making it a discussion of it rather than an argument.
- IP logging is off and anonymous commenting is on. You can offer crit signed-in if you like, but the option's there.
- New! We ask that each concrit provided consist of one positive and one constructive bit of feedback. Bring up something that you like about that player, and in the same comment provide something that you feel they could work on. This is to help round out the feedback and provide a better experience all around.
That's it, that's all!
And, to make things easier, here's a handy-dandy codeset:
Mods & NPCs
Character Name: Ironwood Emperor, Alderwood Commander, Hazelwood Merchant, Eva, Tu Vishan/Asti
Canon: NPCs
User Name:
Focus:
Do you have any feedback for the way events are run? The schedule for applications? How's our admining? Are there things that you would like to see the NPCs facilitating? General feedback to the mods is always welcome and here's a handy-dandy thread to facilitate it. As always, the mod HMD is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week if you'd prefer to use that.
Additionally, our one-year anniversary discussions are coming up! This will be an opportunity to discuss things that you'd like to see added, removed, or modified here in Tu Shanshu. Do you have any particular subject that you'd like to see brought up as part of these discussions? Feel free to suggest the topic here!
Re: Mods & NPCs
Additionally, I continue to be astounded at how much work you guys do all the time, and the most astonishing part is that you are CONSTANTLY on top of things. When you say something will be done on a certain day, it is done on that day, and you haven't deviated from that at all, period, as far as I've seen. This is especially impressive on apps. So major kudos and applause on that.
I will say that if this workload is too intense for you, you might consider taking on more regular, consistent volunteers to do mundane, non-authoritative, housekeeping tasks such as tagging entries. I know you got plenty of volunteers for that when you asked a while ago (myself included) and I encourage you to utilize that again in the future should the need arise.

Roy and I are both looking at taking on official tagging help on a consistent basis. That is the single largest timedrain on the mod side of things. I think it'll come up either after this event or during the six month discussions, though she and I need to sit down and hash out some details. Do you have any suggestions regarding how we might organise such a group? For example: Say we picked up 3-4 tagging helpers, how could we organise them to avoid overlap?

I actually have thought about this already
because I am an organization champion. I would suggest making a gdoc with dates listed by week and having people check them off with their name when they do it. That way people can just do them as they have time and there's no overlap, and no aggravating organizational hassle of trying to assign date ranges to people who may or may not have time to do it that month.I would also suggest having a minimum amount of time passed before it could be officially marked as done, like say a week since initial posting or even two, just to give everyone a chance to tag in that's going to.
ETA: And also have them mark "in progress" so no one does the same thing at the same time.

I'd like to make the suggestion that in the future during large scale events, particularly ones that are widely open ended like this one is and have entire game-impacting scope, that apps possibly be closed until the event has concluded. Couple of reasons for this are:
A) I feel a little bad for incoming characters during this time because characters already the game are generally promised plot-wise elsewhere, especially for things like the investigative groups where even though it's taking a few weeks to run OOCly, it's all taking place during a comparatively small window ICly and we as players don't know the outcomes (which is good! I love the clue-venture approach!) but it leaves current characters in basically a limbo. If they tag DURING, are they somehow finding time to sit down at a console between dramatic plot happenings and talk to new arrivals? If they're tagging "after" the plot, how are they going to be hurt/impacted/etc by this plot that could later require retcon because it should have been there/mentioned/noticed?
B) I feel just as bad for YOU GUYS AS MODS because not only are you running this massive and intensive, NPC heavy plot requiring mind-boggling amounts of coordination and organization... you shouldn't need to worry about processing apps on top of all that. Seriously, I'd have cracked in your shoes.
TL;DR - I feel like new arrivals are kind of getting unintentionally shafted from getting integrated properly to the game during plots of this scope. If it was something like the Winter Gala thing or the Snow Day plot, that'd be different -- not suggesting apps be closed every time we have a game plot, just ones that limit existing characters' ability to interact with them properly.
Anyway that was just my thought. Sorry it got really long and rambly.

Perhaps in the future be conscientious of providing a way for characters who are involved in long term meta plots to not be cut off from the rest of the game? That way, incoming new arrivals wouldn't be isolated, either.

I initially had the same thought about characters having a hard time integrating during a huge plot, but then changed my mind. While I have Hayley and Johnny tied up in the plot, Costigan is free and has been having some great interactions with people he might not normally have spoken much with. It can be a lot to dump on someone just joining "ps powers and dead and rations and turtle sick and stuff," but it also allows them the choice to immediately become more invested if they're interested and to develop quick CR by offering to help the many characters not included in the Team aspect.
If this situation should occur again, I would just make a note on the app page warning that there is a large-scale intensive plot going on and that they have the choice to app now and be a part of it or to wait until it concludes. Maybe reserves during that time could extend until the end of the plot, etc, to allow people that choice.
On the flip side, if it is too much work as MODs, then you should definitely postpone applications. That would be my bigger concern.

However, as this plot is quite long (a few weeks, even) I think it becomes more problematic at that length. This is obviously a case of personal preference, and it's impossible to achieve the perfect balance, but I would count that as a point of consideration-- the length of isolation of a group of characters.
I think they did have a note in the app accept HTML but I can't recall and am too lazy to check. xD

Thanks so much for the feedback. <3

That said, we're definitely considering it for future metaplot events. Clueventure is the first event of its kind in Tu Shanshu and we really appreciate the feedback because it helps us stay on the right page and figure out how to best execute larger events.
The final sets of clues (with outcomes) will start being released come the morrow and we're hoping that'll start freeing up characters for open interaction once more. BUT, as noted! We really appreciate the feedback and will keep it in mind for the future.
Re: Mods & NPCs
-: In future, for this event, I recommend considering each player only being allowed to submit one character (or making sure every player was involved with at least one), as I feel badly for anyone who wasn't able to be included in the Team aspect.

Your suggestion is very valid and we're going to look a little more closely at which characters get involved in the future. The lapse was my (Alex) bad this time as I failed to account for multiple characters per player when setting the final teams. Definitely something I personally will be keeping an eye out for in the future.
