Dick's littlest bro makes him kind of sad just because holy crap what a horrible childhood. But, honestly? After learning about Damian's history, Dick came to respect him. He thinks Damian's been taught to see only certain things about himself, which is why Dick tries to point out his blindspots. Like his potential for goodness or compassion.

So he's a little protective in that if anyone treats Damian as anything less than he is-- as a weapon, for instance-- Dick will go full-on big bro mode (which he doesn't even know he has, since he's usually the baby bro).
