GAME ITINERARY | JANUARY 2017

Hello chelonauts, here is a fresh new itinerary post! Previous months can be found under this tag.

Here's what we've got lined up for January:

Weather

The promise felt in the stiff winds of last month comes to a head partway through the month, with the arrival of a vast storm. It lasts through a day and most of the night, and while there aren't many appreciably tall trees to knock over, some buildings take the brunt of it. Detached gutters and broken tables get blown into other innocent architecture at force, causing not insignificant damage in some cases, and the heavy rains cause some flooding in sectors that aren't the Water sector. Perishables and soft goods in many cases are unsalvageably ruined, and the fields are in poor shape, with much of the current crop either uprooted or drowned.

The resulting cleanup will take weeks, and there are serious injuries and even some deaths in the outcome.

After the storm, the skies remain cloudy, but it's a more distant, even gray: the kind that threatens snow, rather than rain. The sun is nowhere in evidence.

Kedan/Foreigner Relations

Kedan and Foreigner relations are strained this month. The death of Aroyan has left a noticeable impact and what appears to be indifference on the Foreigner’s part has left a bad taste in a few mouths. Foreigners may find Kedan colder, prices higher and while they may not be directly hostile, the Kedan don’t have much in ways of kind words.

Local Events

Hurricane and Clean-up - JANUARY 10TH AND ON

The storm toward the middle of the month impacts the entire turtle, both during and after. Once the worst of it has passed, and the streets are easily traversable again, work parties will be organized. Usayi has a significant hand here, since it's a good chance for the inhabitants of the city to come together and work toward a common goal, and from the sixteenth on it won't be uncommon to find mixed groups of all factions and races working to clear streets and repair damage. The Woodsmen especially will need the help rapidly to salvage what of the current crop they can, and the Healers' Guild will be handling many of the casualties, but are stretched thin by it. Both are eagerly accepting any volunteers with even the barest of knowledge.

Log Note: The storm and its clean-up will have a mod-posted event log.

Strange Happenings

Over the course of the month, items belonging to the Foreigners will be going missing. One minute they might have set it down, and the next it's gone, but whatever is happening, stuff is vanishing. What your character loses (if anything) is up to you. It can be anything from a trinket to a car but the common thread is that all vanished items will have some value to the character.

Log Note: Strange Happenings will not have a mod-posted event log.

NPCs & Families

For all the city leaders' differing agendas, the city-wide state brought on by the hurricane is enough for them to all work toward the same goal, and that pragmatism carries through the month.

KUHIE & KIUEU
The Zealous Twins have completed the construction on the new Ban Om temple, although it takes some damage during the hurricane. The rest of the month is focused on furnishing it, and donations of material, furniture, decorations, etc is all welcome and encouraged. It's interesting to note that they don't actually need the donations, insofar as they could be purchasing these things, but seem to be taking stock of those who are eager to help with the Ban Om cause, particularly if the aid comes from any of the Foreigners.

KYDE
Kyde will be busy helping with clean-up and offering up painkillers and medicine to those who have been wounded. He seems to be dealing with his drunken spat with Usayi by simply pretending it didn’t happen (though Rosyn may receive a written apology sometime in the middle of the month). The Foreigners will still find him friendly and curious, but he may come off as a bit brusque and conversations that would have usually gone on for hours would be cut short.

His work at the college remains consistently erratic. He shows up to lectures at his usual time which is either hours early or twenty minutes late and trailing smoke. There is a noticeable dip in his usual enthusiasm and he seems considerably strained.

MILYN
Milyn is subdued this month, and her normally bubbly cheer is forced if the conversation turns to Aroyan's death or recent disappearances. It's clear that the Healer is taking that both hard and personally, and continuing to research the virulent strain of an otherwise semi-common illness which killed him. Between that, the storm and subsequent clean-up, she's not taking any new volunteers for testing Dust and Red Mist this month, although she's actively monitoring the half-dozen existing participants who are already part of her 'clinical trial'. Despite this, each Foreigner will be getting a delivery of the usual assortment of custom-made candies, which when eaten have the effects of keeping someone warm or cool, temporarily enhancing senses, or just making someone feel calm and relaxed, like a miniature edible version of the Turtle's aura.

ODYNI
Odyni doesn't seem any more pleased with her new position this month as last month, although she is working closely with another one of the Merchant's Guild's members and former peer of Aroyan's named Hativer. There's rumour around the city that she's having a tough time adjusting to the responsibility load in taking over Aroyan's position, but she'll vehemently deny that it's more than she can handle, and that being successful is what he would have wanted. As part of the Merchant's Guild, she will be helping allocate repair funds to various businesses that suffer damage from the storm.

ROSYN
Unlike last month, Rosyn is somewhat less socially active, although still talkative when she is out and about. However, her smiles are a bit more reserved, particularly after the storm. The party last month went well, on the whole, and she's pleased by the turnout though her expression will turn a bit more sour if Usayi or Kyde are mentioned in the same sentence as 'yelling match' or anything similar.

She spends most of her time conducting business for the Shaded Lantern or for the Council, and starts to lend more of her attention to the police force - specifically, she makes a major push with the Council members this month to begin drafting preliminary laws or proposing policies regulating police and other regulatory groups. This also means she'll be visiting the police headquarters and other investigative organizations a fair bit this month, asking questions and generally being her usual self, though there's an undercurrent of seriousness to her activities. While not directly involved with repairs outside of the Shaded Lantern itself, Rosyn does support the efforts monetarily and allows her staff time off as needed or desired to help with the recovery.

USAYI
This month Usayi is quieter, not generally seeking out company unless it seeks him out first. With one exception: in the aftermath of the great storm he makes himself seen again, collecting work crews and organizing them to clean up and repair the damage caused by the hurricane.

He does appear to be making some effort to be gentler, though, as on those occasions when he is spoken to he doesn't snap at Foreigners like he often does.

Kyde does not get such an extension of his patience.

Economy

While meat and meat by-products are in good supply thanks to the hunting and fishing parties organized in December, this month's hurricane takes a significant toll on things like produce, and getting fresh food that isn't meat suddenly becomes several times more expensive. The prices of odd goods and trinkets are going slightly down, however, to reflect the fickle nature of the things found on Ioa Elanag, and the capricious bibiru feet.

Crime

Crime is on the rise this month, and with the hurricane, looting and pilfering will be the most common acts committed, often by poorer kedan who are desperate for food. Gangs will also use the chaos to their own advantage, almost as if to mock the newly budding police force.

Technology

The study of the bibiru feet at the College, while it has yielded some beneficial side-effects, has also led to some accidental experiment derailment thanks to the ones with negative effects. Some researchers are thrilled, others much less so.

The network, however, remains stable, and the unified handsets are reporting few if any faults. However, lacking the materials to make significantly more, production is temporarily halted until a new landfall can provide resources, and maybe half of the city's population has access to one. There have been some arguments among kedan as to who's in the front of the line to acquire them.

OOC Information

UPCOMING 4TH WALL

Tu Shanshu will be having a 4th Wall event in February, exact dates to be determined! Like previous events, this will be "live", in that what happens during the 4th wall will be considered game canon. Start thinking about who you might want to see drop by...

So that's our outline for the month of January! If you have any questions about these happenings, please use the Questions comment below. Otherwise, this post is free space for monthly OOC plotting.
edgeoftheknife: good Grand Mage or best Grand Mage? (play Candy Crush during Elder meetings)

Two questions!

1) Quick bookkeeping thing, the shelter's comment in the Player Businesses section is screened, can we please get it unscreened since I'm back? ♥

2) Erskine has to deal with the Merchant's Guild since he bought the building for the shelter and has to pay dues every month. Can he visit with Odyni or someone else from the guild? We don't necessarily have to thread it out, but he'd want to get to know who he's going to be dealing with now and maybe try to smooth things over with the Guild a bit? If at all possible XD;

I... thought I maybe had another question, but I've forgotten it. I'll get back to you if it comes back to me :)

What is the status of the Kin'nal this month? Where are most of them living, and how does the hurricane impact them?

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner! The Kin'nal have been housed around the city with a slightly larger population in empty Foreigner housing in the Sky Sector, and a number of them died during the storm. The death toll is highest in the Water Sector, as they can't really swim and any that got caught in the flooding likely perished. After the storm passes, they're noticeably out and about less than they were prior to it, as they continue to struggle with the chilly weather.
