Like what kind of predators are around, or good places to seek shelter. More than that, they almost always know if something is wrong in their home. Things that scare people almost always scare animals even more.

Plus they don't lie. They're not always cooperative or helpful, but they've got no reason to lie. You just have to sift out what's useful and what's not.
