Test Drive Meme | #35

TEST DRIVE MEME - TU SHANSHU EDITION!
Itching to try out writing a character? Then rev up your engines, grab your accounts, and slam your way into this meme! Here is a venue for you to try out whatever character there might be tickling your fancy, from fandom to OC, for as few as one and as many as MANY. Seriously, there's no limit.

How do you partake in this fantastic congregation of character testing? Why, by following these simple steps:

→ Comment with the journal of a character you want to test; put their name and canon in the subject line for added sparkles.
→ Tag around with everyone!
→ Profit like you live on a the back of a turtle!
→ Maybe even RESERVE so you CAN live on the back of a turtle!

But wait, there's more! For the low, low price of $9,999.99, you can even use one of our handy prompts when you tag someone. You could even pick one with a Random Number Generator to help decide which prompt to go with!
  1. Haggling Over Something in the Marketplace!
Maybe someone else saw the exact same shiny thing you did at the exact same moment! However shall this be resolved? Remember: blood is extremely hard to scrub off of turtle shell!

  2. Dramatic Chase Sequence!
You're running away from something! It could be anything, from a rampaging kirin to a gaggle of overly enthusiastic children! One way or another, you can't stop, and much like a katamari ball, you feel obligated to grab everyone in your path along the way to keep them out of danger! Or perhaps you're more the sort to try and knock them into it as a distraction...?

  3. Where There's A Will, There's A...?
The Life and Dreaming Planes have been merged, and sometimes what starts out as wishful thinking becomes lured into reality. That slick new motorcycle or pile of kingly treasure you were just daydreaming about? Surprise! It's just appeared in front of you. Though, it may only stay for a short while before it disappears again, so make it count. Hopefully you're not the type to daydream about terrible things befalling people you don't like...

  4. SECRET UNDERCOVER MODE ACTIVATE!
The three major kedan families all have their own agendas, and you've chosen to entangle yourselves with one (or more!) of them. Are you hoping to shift the balance of power? Gain some favours? Perhaps you're on a mission to bring a criminal to justice, or maybe you just want to get the cream of the crop from the black market. Maybe you haven't been hired by them at all, but are using their name for your own goals... as long as no one discovers the lie!

  5. Wait... you want my what now?!
The kedan are a curious folk, and the Foreigners are entertainment in conveniently arriving packages, especially when they come along with unique items that the kedan might not have seen before. Maybe it's your cellphone... or maybe it's your knickers! How badly do you want to keep your stuff from some overeager native shapeshifters who want to buy, bribe, or burglarize it right off your person?

  6. Sea prunes, get your sea prunes right here!
Life in Keeliai can take a little getting used to: the chickens have scales, the cows have feathers, and the fruits come in more colour and pattern combinations than your average tye-dye shirt. Not to mention that meal you just ordered from the food vendor? Has arrived on the plate, and you're pretty sure you just saw it move.

  7. Everybody needs a little darkness...
The Great Enemy may have been defeated over two years ago, and people are even willing to speak Malicant's name aloud now, but there remains a taint in the city never fully purged. Those who consider Malicant a dark god whose end was unjust are the cultists of Keeliai, and they aren't always so easy to identify as one might think. Sometimes their presence is felt in the growing urge to give into one's darker instincts, especially in such a foreign place...

  8. Illicit substances, anyone?
Every city has its vices, and Keeliai is no different. Perhaps you actively sought it out, or perhaps an opportunistic dealer saw you as a potential customer needing a free sample, but you're now in possession of a packet of Lucid, an emotion-enhancing drug. Interested in finding out what happens when you crush that colourful crystal and ingest it?

  9. Incoming!
Tu Vishan's latest landfall stop has brought an unwelcome problem to its residents: enormous, toothy creatures who look more like pterosaurs than most people are comfortable with! With a twenty-foot wingspan, these aren't exactly harmless local wildlife, and they have a nasty habit of swooping down on targets both Foreigner and kedan! How are you going to fend them off, or help someone who might have been injured by the latest dive bombing??

  10. WILDCARD!
Go nuts. Suddenly your character is fighting dragons! Good God, they've found the Millennium Falcon drifting in the ocean! Do you really feel the need to polish every paving stone in the Earth Sector? Anything goes!

Elizabeth (Bioshock Infinite)

"Yes, this one?" Elizabeth said, laying her hand on the cover of the thick book, its leather wrapping obviously old. The kedan shopkeeper, not needing to be particularly insightful to see her keen interest in the item, named a high price of juulan that had her faltering, before offering to compromise and take part of the price in coin, and part in the silver thimble she wore.

Elizabeth pulled back her hand, almost as if she were afraid the shopkeeper might try to take it.

"Oh, no, I'm... this isn't for sale. That's quite all right, I'll... perhaps another time, for the book, if you still have it."

Even though her sheltered upbringing meant that she'd never known anyone her own age growing up, let alone had playmates, the kedan children were perfectly sweet and enthusiastic about the Foreigners, and she felt at ease with them. They shared her wonder of far-off places, and so she's currently sitting on a bench with at least half a dozen clustered around her, the very picture of a practiced storyteller.

"Let me tell you all about a truly magical place, very far away from here: a city called Paris..."

Balthier had an almost pathological aversion to children, but a magnetic attraction to a good story. Especially a good story about a place he'd never been.

So he hung back from the throng of attentive eight year olds, leaning against a tree with his arms folded, but listening quite intently. Paris didn't sound magical. In fact, there was hardly a mention of actual magic at all. But the way she described the place, you'd never know that. Maybe it was magical to her, and Balthier reckoned that's all that mattered in the long run.

To him, it sounded a lot like Bhujerba, with it's narrow, hilly streets, little shops, and old architecture. In other words - charming.

When the story had wrapped up, it wasn't just the children applauding.

Elizabeth looked up at the additional applause, having not noticed the blond man standing nearby, before dipping her head in thanks. Sensing that storytime was over, most of the kedan children wandered off, although a few remained in the area.

"Another fan of Paris?" she asked, smiling.

"No," Balthier said with an easy-going shrug. "But to hear you tell it, that may change. And here I've never even heard of it before."

He strode over, with the appearance and demeanor of a character out of one of the more fantastical stories of adventure.

"Is that the city you're from? Paris?"

Elizabeth had heard that there were people from all manner of places here in Keeliai... the concept of alternate realities wasn't foreign to her, not with her ability to Tear into so many of them, but they were all Earth, just different times and places. It was much harder for her to fathom worlds where places like Paris didn't exist at all.

"Oh, no," she said, hesitating just a moment before she continued, "If only. I've always dreamt of going there. I'm actually from Columbia-- ah, the city, not the Republic in South America."
flybyshooting: (Well that's a thing)

He arched a brow. It wasn't the first time he'd encountered a starry-eyed individual that was convinced the grass was much greener in different pastures. Not that he'd ever been so himself. He was and always would be completely, utterly realistic.

But, then again, sometimes it really was the case. Particularly if you had something to run from.

"I take it there's a North America, East America and West America as well?"

Silently stepping beside Elizabeth, Kevas slammed his hand down on the vendor's table trying to both grab the shopkeeper's attention and make something of an entrance at the same time. When he lifted his hand, he revealed a sizable amount of juulan left behind.

"Da book. I'll take it." Kevas said as he pointed out the same book that Elizabeth tried to purchase earlier.

Slightly startled and a little confused, the shopkeeper handed over the book which Kevas deftly snatched away. He shot the vendor a smug look before turning to Elizabeth and offering her a gentle smile along with the book.

"Here ya go ladymon. I believe ya be wantin' dis?"

[personal profile] isochrone 2016-01-25 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Kevas' intention to make an entrance certainly worked, as both Elizabeth and the shopkeeper jumped in startlement, which only deepened into shock when she had a proper look at his features. But she recovered a few heartbeats later, and offered him a smile that she hoped made up for her initial reaction.

"Thank you! That's very generous of you, sir. You didn't have to do that..."
drinkuntilidie: (I'm a sexy beast)

[personal profile] drinkuntilidie 2016-01-25 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
If her initial reaction to his appearance bothered him any Kevas didn't show it. When you had tusks coming out of your face and stood over seven feet tall you got used to people thinking you were scary. Then again, Kevas normally liked it when people thought he was scary.

"Oh I know I didn't, but ya see I kinda have dis weakness for a cute face." His smile turned a little more playful.

"Plus I really wanted to scare da crap outta dat mon," he continued, not caring in slightest if he offended the shopkeeper.
isochrone: (far beyond even her hand's intention)

[personal profile] isochrone 2016-01-28 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
He was smiling, tusks notwithstanding, and that put Elizabeth more at ease. Really, he wasn't any more startling than a Handyman or a Patriot... and even Songbird was frightening, in its own way. Besides, a compliment was a compliment, regardless of who was speaking it.

"Well, I do appreciate it. I've always had books around me, and coming here, while it's marvelous and exciting... I guess I just wanted something a little familiar. My name's Elizabeth."
drinkuntilidie: (Oh so clever)

[personal profile] drinkuntilidie 2016-01-28 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ain't be nothin' wrong with wantin' somethin' a little familiar. Hell even I be feelin' dat way at times." Kevas wouldn't say he was homesick though. For that, someone needed a home to miss and he was something of a vagrant before he showed up here.

"But dis place, I don't know." His gaze moved past her as he looked towards the horizon. "I think I might find somethin' here worth stayin' for."

Then his attention returned to Elizabeth. "Da name be Kevas. Pleasure to meetcha Elizabeth." He removed his hat, letting his spiky green hair roll out as he dipped into a bow.

Bisi was not a Kedan child - she was arguably not a child at all, but you wouldn't know it from looking at her, frail, sickly and scarred. Her outfit and the metal implants easily mark her for a foreigner, however.

Bisi leaned forward in her wheelchair to hear about this city.

Elizabeth saw the child (what she assumed was a child) in the wheelchair, and while she didn't make any overt gestures to draw attention to Bisi, she did make sure that her story was loud enough to carry clearly to the new arrival.

"--and most recently, the completion of the Eiffel Tower on the Champ de Mars," Elizabeth said enthusiastically, switching to the French and back with little effort. "It's not the tallest structure in the world," she added.

"It must be very impressive!" Bisi replied. "I've never heard of anything like that on Mars, though. Do you know the coordinates?"

"It's not worth the price anyway," Eleanor said from behind the woman, voice muffled somewhat by her helmet. Towering in at six foot 10 before the outfit added another five inches between the boots and head clearance, she would, perhaps, be a startling sight. The eye window had that eerie similarity to a certain songbird, too.

But that would be when Elizabeth turned around. As it was, she was attempting to maintain a pleasant conversation, "I looked through it an hour ago. It's old, but that's about all it is. The essays and stories within it can be found in the library. I read them yesterday."

And she knew it wasn't worth the price because the shopkeeper had tried to sell it to her for a much lower one. Elizabeth's keen interest had jacked up the value, but Eleanor's impossible to read face (her helmet) had kept it closer to it's actual worth.

"Well, I do believe there's something to be said for judging a book by its cov--" Elizabeth said brightly, although her words died off when she turned, and saw the suited woman (audible by voice, certainly not overtly recognizable in that outfit). The window, especially, was startlingly familiar, and Elizabeth automatically reached up to touch the necklace on her choker, without even realizing she was doing it.

"Ah..." she said, looking back at the book; ostensibly to be thoughtful on it, but also to better compose her reaction. When she looked back, she had it much more smooth. "Well, nothing quite replaces a book in the hand, I think. But thank you, for the input."
utopiae: (Stare Forward)

[personal profile] utopiae 2016-01-28 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She had scared the woman. She wasn't terribly surprised by that. But she still didn't know enough about the place they were in to feel comfortable removing her helmet. This was not the world as described to her by her mother or the memories of those in Rapture she'd been fed before she was freed.

"If you're wanting a book to own, there are better ones," Eleanor replied, pointing down the street (to the ire of the shop mistress), "at better prices, too. I saw nothing I was interested in, however you may find one you'd like to keep close."

She leaned back on her heels, looking more than a little awkward for a moment, "I'm sorry I frightened you."
