Itching to try out writing a character? Then rev up your engines, grab your accounts, and slam your way into this meme! Here is a venue for you to try out whatever character there might be tickling your fancy, from fandom to OC, for as few as one and as many as MANY. Seriously, there's no limit.
How do you partake in this fantastic congregation of character testing? Why, by following these simple steps:
→ Comment with the journal of a character you want to test; put their name and canon in the subject line for added sparkles. → Tag around with everyone! → Profit like you live on a the back of a turtle! → Maybe even RESERVE so you CAN live on the back of a turtle!
But wait, there's more! For the low, low price of $9,999.99, you can even use one of our handy prompts when you tag someone. You could even pick one with a Random Number Generator to help decide which prompt to go with!
Haggling Over Something in the Marketplace! Maybe someone else saw the exact same shiny thing you did at the exact same moment! However shall this be resolved? Remember: blood is extremely hard to scrub off of turtle shell!
Dramatic Chase Sequence! You're running away from something! It could be anything, from a rampaging kirin to a gaggle of overly enthusiastic children! One way or another, you can't stop, and much like a katamari ball, you feel obligated to grab everyone in your path along the way to keep them out of danger! Or perhaps you're more the sort to try and knock them into it as a distraction...?
Where There's A Will, There's A...? The Life and Dreaming Planes have been merged, and sometimes what start out as wishful thinking becomes lured into reality. That slick new motorcycle or pile of kingly treasure you were just daydreaming about? Surprise! Though it may only stay for a short while before it disappears again, so make it count. Hopefully you're not the type to daydream about terrible things befalling people you don't like...
SECRET UNDERCOVER MODE ACTIVATE! The three major kedan families all have their own agendas, and you've chosen to entangle yourselves with one (or more!) of them. Are you hoping to shift the balance of power? Gain some favours? Perhaps you're on a mission to bring a criminal to justice, or maybe you just want to get the cream of the crop from the black market.
WILDCARD! Go nuts. Suddenly your character is fighting dragons! Good God, they've found the Millennium Falcon drifting in the ocean! Do you really feel the need to polish every paving stone in the Earth Sector? Please note, Wildcard options can also be what you can choose to do if you aren't yet comfortable in the Tu Shanshu setting, and would prefer a more 'dear-mun'-esque experience. Please specify in your post!
[ There's a young adult standing in the middle of the street. Kind of an odd place, really, considering there seems to be some kirin galloping full tilt down the road! His hood lifts, pulls up over his head, and the golden rivets attached spread apart and begin to draw glowing lines in the air.
Maybe... maybe not such a good idea to be doing that in the middle of their path, bud...? ]
Three | wherever
[ So. There appears to be a book fair going on. Completely out of nowhere, but kedan are all the rage into some seriously bad, dime novel fiction and are trying to spread all the love. The raven-haired youth seems definitely into this block-wide yardsale. ]
Oh... This is a new one. These are all new. How much did you say these were again? Do I have enough...?
[Yorda has never seen books before. It's debatable if she's even literate in anything but the strange sigils of her world. She picks up a book, turning it over and over in her hands, staring intently at it. She looks to the young man nearby.]
[ In all honesty, Lutece doesn't even read the language yet. However, one cannot deny the allure of so many books and so much story all in one place and he's going to teach himself this kedanese through rough application of all his genius as soon as possible.
Because he needs his trashy romance fiction fix. No one is brave enough to get between Lutece and that. ]
I'm not sure yet. I believe that character is... S? No, it's E. [ He takes it, lifts it up for the vendor to see and asks quickly. At the answer, he holds it up facing her and runs a finger along the title. ] Embrace of a Turtle's Shadow. ... I want this, too. Did you find any other copies?
[This thought is quickly followed by Lutece no, which is a long-worn train of thought and comfortingly familiar in a different world.]
[It's not that Lutece doesn't have it handled. It's that Lutece has to be right where he'll get hit if, by some outside chance, something goes wrong. Nate takes up a sensible person's position off to the side before himself casting, running through the formula rapidly under his breath before turning it loose, borrowing the essence of the earth to bolster Lutece.]
[Nate doesn't bother calling out. It isn't necessary.]
[ That magic — Lutece knows the type, doesn't get distracted in a search for who cast it or from where. Not until the sigil is done, not until the kirin are close enough, but once they're in range...
Engage.
It's such a simple design, easy to see where it was going from the start, and Lutece launches a large step to the side as soon as it takes into the ground. The kirin are hard-pressed against the magical dissuasion and are soon taking circles around with nowhere to go. Lutece isn't in a very safe position, but the sigil wears off almost immediately and he dodges away from the rest of the animals before they realize they've been set loose once again.
He looks for the caster of the magic. Picks him out of the crowd faster than anything else. ]
[His flowing locks are lovely, thank you. Nate still takes a moment before nodding to himself. Yes, things are as they should be.]
I doubt I've learned more than you have. The locals don't fuss much over appearance, at least. The language differs in writing, but there must be a spell that translates the verbal...
[Nate considers. A night or two, Lutece said. His eyes narrow a bit, wondering.]
Some sort of ambient magic running through the city, or the plane itself. According to the locals, we're in the very plane of Dreaming, the concept. I'm still coming to grasp all of what that means for the people who live here... which means us, too.
[ Lutece sees the look, blinks a few times. Suddenly: very flustered. ]
Not as of yet. It appears the spell that brings people here and also returns them home is a mystery; the ones who were in charge of maintaining it are now dead and the spell has gone rogue. All that means is that we will become temporary residents until we've resolved that.
[ Lutece doesn't give up just like that, but pragmatism is rather the only option here. At Nate's relaxation, Lutece huffs quietly and crosses his arms in acceptance of the reply. ]
There's an establishment called the Midnight Hotel that is run by another resident like us, what they call a foreigner. An odd man, but fair.
None whatsoever. It used to be much more controlled and intentional, yet no one was privy to how it worked. We'll be following in the footsteps of the dead.
[ They can definitely make progress. It had to be documented somewhere, right? ]
Well... his demeanor is very emotionless. He is also a rather intimidating man, but he appears to have a complete ideal system around being neutral to any on his grounds.
[It's not like Nate minds putting in the effort. It's just... annoying when there's so little to start with. The sigh becomes a disgruntled huff, and Nate folds his arms.]
What, completely neutral? Does the man have nothing he cares about?
[Weird and implausible, so far as Nate's concerned.]
A while, but if what the natives say is true, then we won't be missed while we're gone. No one will notice our absence.
[ Which is troubling in and of itself, yet also poses an opportunity unseen anywhere else. ]
Apparently not. Aside from his Hotel, he would appear willing to maintain this neutrality at whatever cost. Of course... that's what he says his stance is, at any rate.
[ There's a beat, then Lutece just can't keep it in any longer. ]
[Nate is giving all this careful thought, skeptical but willing to roll with it. However, in true Lutece fashion, the last question is a perfect distraction. Nate drops all the previous thoughts to look up, like he's going to see the moon glowing at this hour.]
That's... obviously it's not impossible, but. Really?

Nate! When did you arrive?

[It's still a relief to see Lutece is all right.]
Only a few hours ago.
[He tilts his head to the side, eyes Lutece up and down as if he will have developed some grievous injury since Nate saw him last.]
Have you been here long?
no subject
Perhaps a day or two. The nights are... bright here, I sometimes don't notice. How much have you learned so far?

You haven't been able to find any hint of a way home?
[And then Nate softens, very consciously, in the places Lutece will look for it. His eyes; the carriage of his shoulders.]
Someone who occasionally gets very distracted.
Where have you been staying?

Odd?
