What do you mean, 'can't invent everything in a year'? [Deon asks, intrigued. He hasn't gotten the lowdown on the Dreaming situation yet, nor Malicant.
To the shopkeeper:] Five juulan, or I'm walking away, and you won't get anyone willing to pay half so much for that.
[The shopkeeper grumbles, knowing he's beat, and holds his hand out for the money. Deon counts out five juulan - no more, no less - and retrieves the busted piece of mechanics, a grin threatening to spread across his face.
Finally he turns back to Zelgadis.] What sort of history?
Local history. Generations ago, the people of the city, the kedan, were brought to this world by a woman named Eshai to fight for her. Something about the spell made them unusually passive and incurious. Eshai claimed it was an unintended side effect.
[Zel didn't trust Eshai, and about the only thing that supports her statement was the fact she had to bring them in because the kedan couldn't fight]
About... a bit more than a year ago, the spell was changed, or that part stopped working. While the kedan were under the spell, there wasn't much work on technology. Or much change of any sort.
They were brought? [Deon frowns as they move away from the stall. They'd seemed indigenous, the kedan, but maybe that was just his tourist's eye. (He's still loath to believe he's stuck here.)] With a spell? [Magic bullshit off the starboard bow! Though really, given everything else he's gone through in the past week, the existence of magic is a bit of an arbitrary place to draw the line.] And what were they brought to fight?
[He has a feeling he won't like the answer.]
And why did that part stop working?

Their ancestors were. Like we were. The thing we were brought to fight was defeated last year, but now no one can shut down the spell, so people like you keep showing up.
Maybe that was what changed the spell. Whatever made it self-sustaining modified it so that the kedan were freed of its effects. Or maybe the effect was a result of the thing we defeated. Or the change in the turtle...
... someone told you the city is on a giant turtle, right?
...that had been brought up, [Deon admits,] but it sounded like a bad joke played on a newbie. You mean to tell me that this, this whole city, is on the back of a turtle? Like something out of Discworld?
I've seen the head and flippers. It's obviously a very big turtle, but if you walk to the coast, you can see for yourself.
A while back, there used to be a dozen baby turtles of the same species wandering the streets. Foreigners were standing in for their parents. They decided to strike off on their own last year, though.
[Deon leans back on his heels, at that, like he's come up short against something that radically challenges his entire worldview. Which he has, and it does.]
Bloody hell, [he mutters in wonderment, before switching topics.] Baby turtles? Where did they come from? The kids of the big one, or what? [Given everything that happened with Chappie, he's beginning to think he might not be too bad a dad, one of these days.]
We found them in the ruins of another city, that used to be on the back of a turtle. When that turtle died, it sank to the bottom of the ocean. I gather the eggs were hers...
So the other city was at the bottom of the ocean? How did you get there? [He glances around.] I don't think submarines are exactly consumer technology.
There's a sort of barrier around the turtle. Or was, at least. It kept the water out. Also kept us from trying to sail away. It only came down when we were near land.
[And now he's wondering what sent them down there. Perhaps it was merely the first Emperor's wish: Zelgadis recalled she was still alive back then.]
