getting in trouble already? he wonders...not that he phrases it that way. instead, he takes a position leaning against Hiro's stall, making a small show of examining the results of his trade]
[Hiro shrinks, as if he could get any smaller at this point; if he could sink into the ground and disappear, he probably would. A moment ago he'd been snickering quietly about his prize. Now he clutches it in his fingers, tucked tightly against his chest like a badge of shame he needs to hide.]
I-I didn't...I mean...
[A beat. Then, quieter:]
It's not like he was gonna use it for anything.
[He ducks his head and covers it with his hands, just about curled up into a ball when the Kedan in question storms by - even pauses, to demand if Callaghan's seen a Foreigner boy about yay high, the little thief -]
[so Hiro did do something, and now- theft? he makes a bit of a face, but only emits a simple politeness as the Kedan approaches. he tilts his head in thought, and then notes that he thought he saw someone small heading over towards the main area, but he wasn't sure they were a Foreigner, couldn't make much out of them-
-he fields the any questions of where and how long ago with expert deflection, even offering a bare apology for not paying better attention- anything to get the Kedan moving away, leaving him them in peace, he even watches him leave before lowering his hand, holding it palm-open towards Hiro-
[Hiro lifts his head enough to take a peek at Callaghan's outstretched hand, and he stares at it because what...oh. Oh.
There's a moment's hesitation, and then he fishes the screwdriver out of his pocket, pressing it into Callaghan's palm without looking; he tucks his knees against his chest and buries his face in his arms instead, letting out a quiet, strangled noise.
...At least Callaghan didn't give him away. For that, he's grateful, though it almost makes the whole thing feel worse.]
[good boy. Callaghan takes it, waits a few moments more to ensure the Kedan's given distance, then brings it in to view with a rather skeptical glance. then he makes a mental sigh, lowering his hand again, the screwdriver loosely at his side...
and well within reach.]

[Hiro expects to be in trouble. He fully expects a talk, of some sort, about how his behavior is disappointing and he shouldn't have done this, and he doesn't even have the energy to make excuses because Callaghan would be right. In the face of somebody who he maybe, kind of looks up to, Hiro can't even be cocky or smug about it anymore; he's disappointed in himself now.
