They are certainly different, but hey that's half the fun as far as I'm concerned :P But I can definitely see why some might not like one still. And I probably do have a preference myself for the Dresden Files, largely because I've just been leaning more towards a lot of urban fantasy for the last few years.
Yeah, it can definitely be a bit hit and miss. You really do need someone who actually appreciates the source material - it doesn't mean they have to go an recreate it exactly as is (and really good adaptions do need to change things to suit the medium), but if you don't respect it at all then you won't make anything good. But movies can also be a great way to introduce people to the books and build a bit of a fandom.
