+1 bat-Aleran!

Al here!

First I want to give everyone a head's up that Clark Kent / Superman ( [personal profile] andaway ) will be going on hiatus for two weeks during August. I will still be backtagging things with him though.

And I'm bringing a new character! Tavi, from the Codex Alera books. If you don't know his canon he's basically a young Batman living in a Roman society where everyone has powers EXCEPT HIM. He's smart, and even f he comes from a world where people rely on powers rather than technology he's very skilled and a tech kind of guy. You totally needed someone else to blow up the consoles right? He'll be living in EA-4B.

As for me you can still catch me on [plurk.com profile] crotalus, or PM either of my character's accounts.

Tavi! Never thought I'd see anyone playing Codex of Alera characters :P

(And clearly someone needs to start a People Who Blow Up Consoles club...)

Ooh, so you haven't read the whole series yet? And I'm sure you'll do fine!

(Hi, My Name is Carlos, and I'm addicted to Destroying Consoles. For Science.)

Well you should still have plenty of fun reading the rest of them :P

and clearly we just need to make everyone read the books themselves, yupyup. Then there would be no need for vagueness! :P

And then people will play characters from the books and I will take over the internet at the helm of the Great Aleran Uprising of-- I mean you saw nothing

nope nothing at all, no secret uprisings here

Sadly I never got pinged by any of the characters myself, alas. But I'd definitely be happy to see more around!

Yes! I'd always enjoyed The Dresden Files, so I went and hunted down his other series one time. I think I might have a couple of them too, maybe (my book collection is kind of all over the place atm, it's tricky to keep track of what I do and don't have...)

And wow, looks like I somehow missed you being on the taken list! How did that happen?

Edit: Also I should add too that I'm Blue, hah XD Nice to meet you!

My inner librarian is shocked, shocked I say--but I'm in the middle of moving, so I couldn't tell you half the books I do and don't own. /sheepish

Nice to meet you, too! You missed it because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition Codex Alera because despite being by Jim Butcher it's a surprisingly unknown canon.

Hah, moving previously is kinda the reason they are so all over the place. They all got packed up into boxes when I went away to study, and when I cam back the shelves I'd had them on before had all been removed so now I basically have nowhere to actually put them and they just remain in boxes and random places everywhere. One day though, when I have managed to save up enough for my own place. One day...

Yeah, which is rather odd really. You'd think more people who like the Dresden Files would think to read his other books too. And let's face it, they do also have the most awesome story of how they came about to be written in the first place! (Although I do maintain that 'the lost roman legion with pokemon' is not at all a bad story idea. It is an awesome story idea.)

Yeah, I know that feeling. One day...

I know, right? But people who love Dresden just don't even seem to have bothered to find out if he's written anything else! I can kind of understand choosing not to read his other stuff, but not even bothering to be aware? That I don't get. Maybe it will change when his new steampunk series comes out, but... I don't know. And it didn't keep First Lord's Fury from being #7 on the NYT Bestseller List when it came out, despite being the series of his no one's heard of. So that's something.

And then when you realize it isn't just a Lost Roman Legion with Pokemon, it's a Lost Roman Legion with Pokemon fighting a Zerg invasion (to say nothing of the tribal not!elves and the warrior giant wolfmen with eldritch abomination-shaped sorcery and the yeti), it is just a giant melting pot made exclusively of Awesome. And yet! I don't understand it.

Ooh, he's writing a steampunk series? I hadn't heard that! I'll have to check that out once it's published.

Maybe it's the fact that it is a different genre? Different audiences, that sort of thing? /scratches head

It can be tricky to get people to actually read books sometimes, too. Like I've had other book series that I love to death that I'll try and convince people to read, and yet a lot of the time very few, if any, do. I suppose we'd need someone to make a movie or something first for it to really become a Thing (...although I would be happy to see a Codex Alera movie or tv series. It'd be pretty awesome if done properly, really)

[personal profile] survival_isnt_living 2014-08-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Cinder Spires is the series name, the first book is called The Aeronaut's Windlass. I admit that a part of me is looking at that title and remembering he once said that steampunk is Alera's future... but I don't actually expect it to be a sequel series.

Yeah, some of the lack of sharing readership is that; I know for a fact a lot of people who love Dresden are not fans of Alera, and then again a lot of people I know who loved Alera got disenchanted with Dresden. The number of people I like who enjoy both is surprisingly small, just because of the very different stories and also the very, very different styles of writing he uses for them both.

A part of me would love to see it, too! And a part of me is afraid of it, mostly because I'm not sure how I'd do it... TV series more likely than movies, given the large scope of it and how spread out action is. I'd love to see how they'd do furycrafting on screen. On the other hand, look what happened to The Last Airbender.

Awesome, I'll have to keep an eye out for it!

They are certainly different, but hey that's half the fun as far as I'm concerned :P But I can definitely see why some might not like one still. And I probably do have a preference myself for the Dresden Files, largely because I've just been leaning more towards a lot of urban fantasy for the last few years.

Yeah, it can definitely be a bit hit and miss. You really do need someone who actually appreciates the source material - it doesn't mean they have to go an recreate it exactly as is (and really good adaptions do need to change things to suit the medium), but if you don't respect it at all then you won't make anything good. But movies can also be a great way to introduce people to the books and build a bit of a fandom.

I'd never thought I'd see a Codex Alera cast.

It looks like Tavi is rooming with Iroh. Which probably means Iroh is going to fill in as benevolent uncle figure, because that is generally how he handles young people.
