Gene's cool. A little standoffish, but not off-puttingly so. It's a little weird for Tony, since Gene knows another version of him and Tony's still kind of touchy about alternate realities, but he's trying to get over it and not being a douche to Gene is part of that. He also thinks that he probably ought to try being his friend (as much as he can be) due to them being friends in Gene's reality. Or so he thinks.
