I remember the first time I read it, I went "this book has a reputation and I don't get it at all"

and then I learned to actually understand what I was reading, and I was enlightened.

Yep, sounds familiar.

Btw, did you read that Alex Ross article I linked on plurk a while back? Apparently early drafts had a much clearer suggestion of Henry and Basil having "gone to school together" and even what basically amounts to a jealous hissyfit from Harry, directed at Basil over Dorian.

That...would put a new and interesting cast on everything, had Oscar kept that in.

I thought I had, but apparently I didn't. That casts a very interesting light on it all.

Doesn't it, though?
Tellingly, Wilde removes intimations of a prior attachment between Basil and Lord Henry. He deletes a description of Basil “taking hold of [Lord Henry’s] hand.” One passage is so heavily scratched out as to be almost illegible, but in it Lord Henry seems to berate Basil for having become Dorian’s “slave,” and then blurts out, “I hate Dorian Gray.” In the end, Wilde cancels any hint of jealousy and gives Lord Henry the mask of an amused aesthete: “Basil, this is quite wonderful! I must see Dorian Gray.”

Well, would you look at that. That's very very interesting indeed.
