CR TEAL DEER MEME

How to play? Reply to this post with the characters you play, people will then reply to you asking 'What does X think of my character Y?' then zoom around and ping other people in the same manner to generate some CR chatter! This is a good way to see where your current CR stands and what your characters secretly think of each other.

Oh gosh, where to even start?

I think the easiest thing to say off the bat that Bryn simply adores Henry. He's one of the most important people to her on the turtle and she feels so very close to him. Not only is he intelligent and engaging, but he's both from a similar background as her but without some of the stifling conventions that comes with it. It's one of the very first reasons for which she felt at ease around him.

His opinions and openness on a number of matters are very interesting to her. In fact, she's come to value his take on many things which is why often enough she comes to him with a "What do you think about xyz?" It's a little alarming to realize that she holds him in such high esteem that she does in some ways hope that she has his approval. I don't think she is so far gone as to do things to seek it, but it always makes her happen when he compliments her or implies that he thinks she's done something right/thinks about something in a way he also does.

It's a lot alarming, to be honest, and for all Grantaire has said this and that about him, she still thinks he's a very good man and has no inkling at all that he might be trying to subtle shape her mind or affect her actions.

All in all, she cares about him a great deal, feels quite affectionate toward him and yes, there is an attraction there that makes me put my face in my hands before shaking my head. Because no, Bryn. No. Stop please. Sigh. So. Yes.

Bryn sort of idolizes Henry in his own way and seems to fail to notice any of the signs that he may be a very bad, no-good influence on her life /)_(\

He's noticed the effect his approval has on her. :| He uses that the way he uses flattery on Dorian, and enjoys it in exactly the same way.

Like I said, this is totally destined to end well, right?

Ahahaha oh god, Henry no. This isn't going to be terrible at all. Not one bit.

You know that the totally horrible thing that will inevitably happen will take us by surprise, probably. We won't even see it coming. Bryn will just be playing with her WWHD bracelet and BAM suddenly disaster and Henry's not taking any of the blame for it.

Pretty much. One misapplied epigram or piece of bad advice and things will start sliding right downhill.

Hmm. There are really two very important points in the novel where Henry (deliberately or not) applies pressure to Dorian that pushes him downhill. The first, of course, is the panegyric on youth that leads Dorian to make his fatal wish. The second is after Sybil has killed herself. Henry's genuinely sympathetic to Dorian's sadness over her death, but he also basically talks Dorian out of his grief and into treating the whole matter as an aesthetic experience, rather than managing it with any real human feeling: "Sometimes, however, a tragedy that possesses artistic elements of beauty crosses our lives. If these elements of beauty are real, the whole thing simply appeals to our sense of dramatic effect. Suddenly we find that we are no longer the actors, but the spectators of the play. Or rather we are both. We watch ourselves, and the mere wonder of the spectacle enthralls us. In the present case, what is it that has really happened? Some one has killed herself for love of you. I wish that I had ever had such an experience."

This gives me an idea for how a conversation might go with an upset and de-powered Bryn. Just a thought...

This is one of those things I haul out when people need proof that Henry is, in fact, terrible.

The specifics will come together at the time of conversation, of course, but I have a clearer idea now of what themes he'll probably bring to it, and, yeah. We'll see how that goes.
