Well hello there.

Grantaire thinks that Henry is incredibly two dimensional, and not nearly as interesting as he wants people to believe. That said, they get along swimmingly because their personalities mesh despite the fact that Grantaire finds way too much pleasure in ruffling stuffy english feathers.

That Grantaire sees him as two-dimensional is a credit to Harry's carefully cultivated appearance of superficiality, though possibly not a credit to his character. You and I know there's more to it but—Grantaire is 100% within his rights to think there's less to Harry than there appears. And I think Harry not-so-secretly enjoys being treated with skepticism. It keeps him on his toes. For some reason he doesn't see Grantaire as drawing-room competition as he does Oscar, and I'm not 100% sure why yet—possibly just because they simply don't socialise like that.

Grantaire isn't drawing-room competition because he doesn't care to be, I think. Unlike people like Henry or Oscar, he doesn't carry himself to be loved and admired for his brain and eloquence. He simply speaks to bring others down or to just speak. He doesn't care nearly as much as they do what others think of him, just so long as they keep him around.
