[One of the things that Bruce finds most tiresome about this place is the need to keep up his public persona. It... bothers him less than it could (sometimes less than he thinks it should) but it's still a duty like any other, and barring any convenient murder charges (not) he has no reason to discard it.

So here he is. Arguing. With the utmost in congeniality, over the price of a shishkkabob. And he'd have kept on arguing, too, if not for-- well.

He's in the unique position to know the exact sensation one gets when someone walks over their grave. And it's that sensation that kicks his Bat-senses into overdrive. Oh, it's subtle enough. He doesn't do anything so graceless as gawk in every which direction. Instead, he shifts just enough that he can see behind him in the reflective panels of the cart. A sideways glance tracks the height and width of shadows nearby. If he closed his eyes, he could make a rough estimate as to how many bodies are breathing in the plaza. It's hard to put his paranoia into words (you'd need more words than exist in the English language) but paranoia only means so much when you glimpse a familiar face in the crowd.

His Zatanna, not the child he's half-taken under his wing out of respect for John's memory. It's out of habit that he mentally catalogues everything he has on him at the moment. It doesn't escape him how his brain lingers over anything he could use as a weapon or a counterpoint to everything he knows she's capable of.
