Steph pretty much picked Leo's type from the moment he opened his mouth. She saw straight past all the talkig himself up to a kid with more self esteem issues than any one person should have.

This is partly because she does the exact same thing herself, even if it's not to the same degree as Leo takes it, she knows all about talking yourself up to hide the fact that you think you're worthless. Which is. sad. for both of them.

Her solution to this is to tease him gently, because pity never works and he'd never actually admit to any self-esteem problems, so she figures she'll just befriend him and see if she can gently encourage him to like himsef a little more.

That won't stop her being kind of a jerk but she means well.
