It's not the face specifically - although a good deal of it is, if Skulduggery's being brutally honest with himself. It's been over a year. He can allow himself some shock, tinged with the frustration of how long it took for this to happen. But no, his utter inability to think has less to do with the face itself and more to do with how young the face is.
The Valkyrie Cain he left behind was eighteen years old. This is Valkyrie as she was when he first met her.
That... complicates things.
A few moments of silence, and then Skulduggery takes a step forward. "You're late," he says. There's a smile in his voice, along with plenty of mock disapproval.
