The attack is actually quite brazen, occurring almost as soon as Sokka leaves the Hotel property, in the middle of the day. It's carried out by a lone attacker, and the male appears neither kedan nor human, but a vaguely reptilian species unfamiliar to Keeliai altogether. He will attack unarmed except for wicked looking claws, which secrete a paralytic agent, and upon contact will immobilize Sokka. Favouring speed, as if determined to get away before those watching (it IS the middle of the day in a highly traveled area, after all), the male will simply take everything of Sokka's he can get his hands on, soul gem included before fleeing towards one of the gates that exit Keeliai to the rest of the shell.

The paralytic agent will remain in Sokka's bloodstream for about 12 hours, although he'll regain most of his movement after the first hour. His soul gem will be recovered outside the city in one of the Woodsmens' fields the next morning, and be brought to him. There is no outward damage to either the jewelry casing or to the gem, however it can now be found to emit the sound of running water, if one brings it to their ear.
