While the Great Turtles are functionally immortal they are not ageless and it seems as if Tu Vishan is actually quite a bit past his prime, regardless of the teenage visage he takes when he appears to the Foreigners. It's also speculated that the Great Turtles provided a sort of life force connection between them, renewing their energies when they came into proximity to one another. That link appears to carry on in death, for whenever Tu Vishan travels to the mainland, which are made up of the many deceased Great Turtles who've fallen before him, Tu Vishan's health is impacted negatively.
