When I was in college and majored in English, I specifically studied and wrote many of my papers around the concept of classic fiction as social commentary (such as Shakespeare and the Tudor era, early American literature, Twain, Salinger, etc). Is is permissible for Charles to study some of these books in that manner and picking up on the fact that there is no written Malicant references?
