GAME ITINERARY | MARCH 2016

Hello chelonauts, here is a fresh new itinerary post! Previous months can be found under this tag.

Please note, there will be a March Mingle Log going up soon for Hatal city things. Here's what we've got lined up for March:

Weather

Any remaining vestiges of the fog which plagued Keeliai in January are now completely cleared up. On top of that, while it's still obviously winter, there's a vague sense of spring in the air. Icicles along the edges of rooftops are beginning to melt, which is a surprise to many kedan since the temperature hasn't felt like it's changed at all. The sun shines directly down on the turtle without a barrier of dark clouds more often, which in turn spurs more birdsong and even the occasional flower trying to poke its way out of packed, cold dirt.

There are still flurries of snow, and within its walls Hatal is still generally warmer than Keeliai.

Incidentally, there will be some confusion about the exact date early in the month. Though kedan will insist last year was a leap year, for some reason many believe that this year was a leap year as well. Though in the end and after discussion calendars will eventually sync up (with our OOC year, 2016), some kedan will be grumpy about having a 'ghost day' put in their heads by the Dreaming (or, conversely, having missed it).

Curiously, this effect extends to Hatal, though the residents there are much less likely to bring it up with each other, let alone visitors.

In the same vein, a few Tavimbians have ventured into Keeliai this month. Not many; most of them don't take well to cold, used to a controlled climate within Hatal, but those who do seem to regard the Sectors with wonder and marvel -- especially the Wood Sector, as most of their flora grows in glass tubes! There's a bit of contention when some visiting Igheeri start leaving claw marks in the sides of buildings, but there are no major issues to note.

Kedan/Foreigner Relations

Right now, the majority of kedan are treating Foreigners as brothers-in-arms, almost as if the truth compulsion epidemic was an intense battle it took courage, companionship, and brotherhood to overcome. The fact that many of the Foreigners were equally affected, and some even came to the coping party in the Courtyard, has earned them a lot of goodwill this month. While this doesn't lead to any practical benefit - no discounts in the shops, for example - a lot of the kedan will be quite willing to talk with Foreigners about what a difficult time being compelled to tell the truth was. In fact, some of them will insist on it, and grow quite embarrassed if the Foreigner admits they weren't affected at all.

The scattered lone voices from last month questioning the Foreigners' true intentions are still audible, however, and despite the general public's goodwill, they can still be encountered in bars and taverns telling their thoughts to anyone who will listen. This actually leads to quite a few bar fights, as angry kedan fight in defence of the Foreigners.

Local Events

HAPOYELA'S BLESSINGS - MARCH 5

Note: this event was originally scheduled for February 25th, but due to an unexpected OOC delay, it will now take place on March 5th. ICly, it will always have been advertised for March 5th.

According to the Sabonile priests, Hapoyela wishes to properly welcome the Foreigners and the kedan to the full scope of Tavimbi's hospitality, and has instructed the clergy to organize a suitably impressive celebration for the citizens of the oldest living Great Turtle. All Foreigners, as well as many notable kedan including the Family heads, are invited to attend a grand feast and celebration at the Sabonile Temple, one of the largest buildings in all of Hatal. The clergy has promised an evening of good food, lively entertainment, and the magnificent blessings of Hapoyela. At the same time, the Sabonile will be hosting a soup kitchen in the Temple's courtyard, feeding the hungry and the poor, as dictated by their religious tenets and beliefs.

While those who receive an invitation to the event, which the Sabonile consider a sacred charge from Hapoyela, are not required to attend... it could be seen as a disrespect to their deity.

Log Note: The feast celebration will have a mod-posted event log, with more details and descriptions in the log.

EARTHQUAKE / KIN'NAL RIGHTS PROTEST - MARCH 13 - MARCH 15

Those present in Hatal on the evening of Sunday, March 13th will feel a large rumbling coming from the outer areas of the city. It jars loose several metal beams and breaks open a rock face, sending some debris plummeting down to the Causeway level. There are minor injuries and damage, but nothing significant is immediately apparent (although you wouldn't know it, from the Muin shopkeeper who lost a few of the magnetically charged three-wheel carriages and spends the whole night screeching about his profit margins to anyone who will listen and even some who won't) and most people will assure the visitors that this sort of thing is normal, and nothing to worry about. The Dexedi have structural workers on site within an hour, with the Sinayg using their ability to sense the stone to point out where additional supports need to be added.

On the city's outskirts, however, it's a much different story. Several small Kin'nal housing areas were caught in a rockslide, and the meager shoring up that most of the dwellings have isn't much protection. There are several dozen Kin'nal casualties, as well as a pair of Muin who'd been in the area. This particular section of the Lorn Level had been deemed "safe" by the engineering Dexedi, at least as far as that district went. The physical damage is also extensive-- and hard to clean up, considering it takes a big group of Kin'nal to even move one of those large rocks!

Spurred by the large number of Kin'nal deaths, a protest is quickly planned for March 15th, staged on the Causeway Level for maximum visibility. Much like protests many would be familiar with on Earth, there are signs and groups of people -- although notably all Igheeri, Sinayg or Muin -- calling for fairer treatment for the Kin'nal. The main goal seems to be to either allow the Kin'nal to live in the other areas outside of the Lorn Level, or to properly dedicate resources to developing areas of the Lorn Levels to be safely habitable.

Log Note: The earthquake and protest will not have a mod-posted event log.

MYSTERY EVENT - NEWS FROM AFAR - MARCH 27

Near the end of the month, the Xojan returning from their trip to Zirot will bring very interesting news for the Foreigners...

Log Note: This event will not have a mod-posted log, but it will have an OOC post with more information.

NPCs & Families

Where there is still the occasional public clash between the Snakes and the Metalworkers, the sheer level of tension from last month seems to have petered out. Both family heads have been given more important things to worry about, and - quite honestly - individual Snakes and Metalworkers are actually growing bored of fights which never go anywhere. Anyone asked will vehemently deny that they're on good terms, but for all intents and purposes, there's a refreshing peace in Keeliai throughout most of March.

TU YUNXU
Guess who doesn't enjoy being compelled to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help him, Eshai? Yunxu's been cranky ever since speaking to several kedan and even the occasional Foreigner at the truth party. He isn't visible in public very often this month, but his general crankiness is pretty easy to figure out just from encountering the Snakes. While the unspoken rule of 'Don't touch the Foreigners' remains in effect, Foreigners may notice some groups of Snakes pushing that rule here and there - hassling someone in an alley, or pointedly refusing to break up a bar fight. It's almost as if they're not worried about any repercussions at the hands of their leader, though they do take pains to avoid physically touching any Foreigner.

As for Yunxu himself, the more observant may notice that a few separate times during the month he can be seen somewhere outside the Midnight Hotel, watching the front door. No one - not even Meisheng - seems to know why.

ZANRU/XUIYU
Xuiyu approaches the lowered tension with equanimity, as though she expected things to blow over if let happen. The Metalworkers are a touch belligerent, like children whose Feelings weren't given proper attention, but on the whole they seem to have decided to ignore the Snakes wholesale.

Rather, they do have other things to focus on. Courtesy of Valdis, the Metalworkers are focussing their attention on energy manipulation. It will likely be a very long time before they see any returns, but with the theory behind Tony's energy shields they're confident they can adapt the technology. As a result, some minerals are particularly scarce on the turtle, with some huge exchanges occurring between Metal Sector and Hatal. Some of these exchanges include the imbued crystals which caused the truth event last month, though any Metalworker infected is kept closely under wraps.

After the earthquake, however, nearly the whole of the Metalworker family turns out to offer their help to reconstruction. Though most personnel aren't needed, the Sinayg do accept some additional labour … grudgingly, when it becomes clear that groups of Metalworkers, of their own volition, go to the Lorn Level to help the Kin'nal.

Though no one is under investigation, per se, there's a rumour going around that the Sabonile priests are housing a Metalworker kedan who has been seen around Lorn Level, speaking to Kin'nal, and was present during the disaster. (This bears out -- Xuiyu can be seen visiting the Sabonile Temple after the 15th, muttering about her stupid cousin.)

HEOJIN
Exchanges of technology between the Woodsmen and the Muin continues this month, with both parties having encouraging results in adapting each others' processes or with new crops. The Woodsmen on the whole are more prone to movement as well, although in strangely large groups -- many of them, in fact, are parents taking their children to Hatal to broaden their experiences.

It's apparent to any observers that the Woodsmen, like many kedanese families, have communal child-caring techniques, with any one of the group liable to keep an eye on any child.

Heojin can often been seen in one of the baby-centric groups on any given day, doting on one child or another and, apparently, afflicted with a smile that won't go away. Oddly enough, a good portion of the time he appears to be breast-feeding, a fact which will occasionally make even other kedan look twice with initial confusion. (Apparently shapeshifting working breasts is outside the realm of most kedans' capabilities.)

MILYN
The Cherrywood Healer is still definitely angling to acquire some sort of growing system similar to the food terrariums on the Reservoir Level, although she's not had any success yet. (She has, however, gotten some of the Dexedi to start asking the Foreigners, is she always like that?)

Prior to the 13th, she also makes no secret of her intention to visit the Lorn Level -- specifically, the dangerous caves from which are harvested the assortment of fungi and cave flora. When reminded about the dangers of the Koxalu scorpions, she might remark that they're probably not as bad as people make them out to be-- she's handled Gha'nal, after all! After the 13th, she'll be helping treat wounded Kin'nal in the area.

AROYAN
With the initial flurry of trade agreements put into place between the Merchant's Guild and Hatal, Aroyan is in high spirits this month. Most of the time he can be found in the shops area of the Reservoir Levels, speaking with individual store owners and the Sinayg cold-forgers. When he's off the clock, however, he can be found on the Causeway, showing the various attractions to his wife and two children.

Economy

Economically, Keeliai is booming! With many merchants in Hatal eager to open up a new client base (as Tu Vishan has never previously been such an easily-accessible market) with the kedan and the Foreigners, many local businesses are experiencing a windfall. This will translate to increased confidence in Keeliai's market. For business-owner Foreigners, it might mean that well-off kedan are willing to invest with their ventures (particularly helpful if a Foreigner wanted to start up a business this month!) or for Foreigners employed by kedan, either a one-time bonus or a permanent raise in wages. All in all, the juulan is flowing. After a particularly lean fall and winter, many kedan are celebrating this good fortune.

Crime

General crime in Keeliai has been at a steady level for the past couple of months, and - for the most part - can be avoided by employing a little common sense, such as locking your door, avoiding walking at night, or refraining from punching anyone. Just like last month, most of the potential criminals seem to focus on Hatal, and just like the past year or so, serious crime like murder is practically nonexistent. However, there's a sharp increase in the rate of muggings occurring in the poorer districts of the city, and no one seems willing to talk about why.

Technology

On the whole, factions are turning to their own sorts of technology -- but since most of it is still in development, Keeliai itself won't see many returns yet. The Woodsmen's hydroponics are the nearest to being viable long-term, but the Metalworkers are focussing their efforts on energy manipulation and storage.

The College is still examining the salt, thanks to the explosion a couple of months ago, but a few young entrepreneurs can also be found around the Xojan on hang-gliders.

After the earthquake, Keeliai's collective knowledge of construction and architecture also rises, thanks to the efforts in helping restore Hatal; by the end of the month, one or two minor ongoing renovations in Sky Sector can be seen to reflect Hatal styles.

International

CHIHUELO

Among the arrivals through Hatal's customs port this month, are several small groups of Chihuelans, for a total of about 25 of them all told. They wear similar -- but not exact -- military uniforms to the ones who accompanied the Justicar to Keeliai in September. No one in Hatal seems to take special note of them; as one of Tavimbi's closest continental neighbours, Chihuelo and Tavimbi have a fairly strong trade history. And the Chihuelans don't seem to be inclined to stir up trouble, although Foreigners will consistently notice them in proximity, being particularly attentive to the Foreigners and kedan spending time in Hatal.

OOC Information

UPCOMING FOURTH WALL

We're looking to have Tu Shanshu's second 4th Wall Event in April. Like last year's 4th wall, we're going to be using the Dreaming as an instigating event, which means that what happens during the event will be considered "live", or part of the game's continuity. We're tentatively looking at April 4th-22nd for dates, but we'd like some feedback on whether that will work for our players! (As with last year, guest characters will be given some time at the end of the event to keep tagging and finish up threads, simply that ICly, the characters will be whisked away again at the end of the two weeks.)

So let us know if those dates are good, or if they should be moved; also if you have any questions about the 4th wall event, please direct them HERE. Please note, we don't have the exact IC setup done yet, so we can't answer anything regarding that part yet.

So that's our outline for the month of March! If you have any questions about these happenings, please use the Questions comment below. Otherwise, this post is free space for monthly OOC plotting.

Re: QUESTIONS

If Valdis were to ask around about the general opinion of the Sabonile by the non-members of the sect, what might she learn?

Also, if she were to (after my hiatus is over) poke the Xuntane lightly with her magic, what would happen?

So if someone were chasing their maybe imaginary white rabbit through the city where the Chihuelans are and pickpocketing a few if he can anything of note or just more juulan for him to waste on things that are bad for him?

Hrm. Now that is interesting (to John at least). Thanks!
