Test Drive Meme | April 2015

TEST DRIVE MEME - TU SHANSHU EDITION!
Itching to try out writing a character? Then rev up your engines, grab your accounts, and slam your way into this meme! Here is a venue for you to try out whatever character there might be tickling your fancy, from fandom to OC, for as few as one and as many as MANY. Seriously, there's no limit.

How do you partake in this fantastic congregation of character testing? Why, by following these simple steps:
→ Comment with the journal of a character you want to test; put their name and canon in the subject line for added sparkles.
    → Tag around with everyone!
→ Profit like you live on a the back of a turtle!
→ Maybe even RESERVE so you CAN live on the back of a turtle!
But wait, there's more! For the low, low price of $9,999.99, you can even use one of our handy prompts when you tag someone. You could even pick one with a Random Number Generator to help decide which prompt to go with!
  1. Haggling Over Something in the Marketplace!
Maybe someone else saw the exact same shiny thing you did at the exact same moment! However shall this be resolved? Remember: blood is extremely hard to scrub off of turtle shell!

  2. Dramatic Chase Sequence!
You're running away from something! It could be anything, from a rampaging kirin to a gaggle of overly enthusiastic children! One way or another, you can't stop, and much like a katamari ball, you feel obligated to grab everyone in your path along the way to keep them out of danger! Or perhaps you're more the sort to try and knock them into it as a distraction...?

  3. Where There's A Will, There's A...?
The Life and Dreaming Planes have been merged, and sometimes what start out as wishful thinking becomes lured into reality. That slick new motorcycle or pile of kingly treasure you were just daydreaming about? Surprise! Though it may only stay for a short while before it disappears again, so make it count. Hopefully you're not the type to daydream about terrible things befalling people you don't like...

  4. SECRET UNDERCOVER MODE ACTIVATE!
The three major kedan families all have their own agendas, and you've chosen to entangle yourselves with one (or more!) of them. Are you hoping to shift the balance of power? Gain some favours? Perhaps you're on a mission to bring a criminal to justice, or maybe you just want to get the cream of the crop from the black market.

  5. WILDCARD!
Go nuts. Suddenly your character is fighting dragons! Good God, they've found the Millennium Falcon drifting in the ocean! Do you really feel the need to polish every paving stone in the Earth Sector? Please note, Wildcard options can also be what you can choose to do if you aren't yet comfortable in the Tu Shanshu setting, and would prefer a more 'dear-mun'-esque experience. Please specify in your post!

1. MARKETPLACE

[personal profile] venivicivetinari 2015-03-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
[There is a gentleman in the marketplace, a tall very thin man who has been widely described in his own world as 'a carnivorous flamingo'. He wears a dusky sort of black which looks plain until you get up close to see the lining, and has an elegant cane in hand. He is, currently … ahem … negotiating with a merchant in the marketplace. For a given definition of negotiating. The merchant thinks they're haggling over price. The merchant would be wrong.]

The back of a giant turtle, you say? Goodness me.

[The merchant’s attempts to throw the newcomer off also aren't going terribly well. Most Foreigners are put off by the idea they're on the back of a giant turtle. This one is practically blithe about it. Also, his stare is unnerving. Does he blink? Surely he blinks.]

I don't suppose it has any giant elephants as well? No? How intriguing.

[Seriously. What.]
skeletonenigma: (darkfirewind)

[personal profile] skeletonenigma 2015-03-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Skulduggery's walking by. Under normal circumstances, he would keep on walking by, and leave the vague impression that someone needs a little help acclimatising for someone else to deal with. Because this man, apparently, doesn't need very much help acclimatising.

But these are not normal circumstances. Skulduggery's in a funny sort of mood, one where he feels like whistling, but a number of frustrating things are keeping him from doing so.

So he stops.]

You're not a necromancer, are you?
venivicivetinari: (Default)

[personal profile] venivicivetinari 2015-03-24 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Havelock turns and regards Skulduggery with cold blue eyes and an arched eyebrow. Skeletons aren't precisely ordinary even on the Disc, though Havelock does recall the Unseen University employing one for their ... ahem ... Department of Post-Mortem Communications. Havelock does make the assumption that this is not that particular skeleton, for two reasons: One, he would recognise Havelock if so; and two, no one who lives, learns or works within a mile's radius of the Unseen University has this skeleton's excellent taste in clothing.

[It does, however, sound rather as if he's asking Havelock if he's a wizard. And that's amusing enough for a smile.]

I must admit that's the first time anyone's accused me of that.

[Despotism, certainly. Tyranny, once or twice. For some reason people seemed adverse to suggesting he's actually a necromancer, as if they're afraid they'd make it true.]
skeletonenigma: (welltailoredsuit)

[personal profile] skeletonenigma 2015-03-24 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah. A question-dodger. That's interesting. The man's either a politician, or he's accustomed to a more private and ultimately more feared form of authority.

Or both, come to think of it.]

Would that be because you come from a world where necromancers don't exist, or because you are one?
venivicivetinari: (Default)

[personal profile] venivicivetinari 2015-03-24 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
[An intelligent skeleton, even. How interesting.]

Oh, they quite exist.

[Havelock pauses.]

After a fashion. People simply don't like the idea that I might be one of them.

[Particularly the part where he might actually have used necromancy to make a deal with Death and thereby rule the city forever. There had been some whispers. There were always whispers. A number of them were even in his favour.]

How long, might one ask, have you been residing on the back of this giant turtle?

[Blithely. It's only big enough for one city and surrounding countryside. Hardly 'giant'; perhaps it was a juvenile. Havelock could think of any number of philosophers, astronomers and wizards who would go purple at the idea that they'd missed the opportunity to witness a Time of Mating.]
skeletonenigma: (snap)

[personal profile] skeletonenigma 2015-03-24 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
[If he is a politician, Skulduggery pities the country he's in charge of.]

One may certainly ask. A little over a year. It's never been on the backs of giant elephants, if that's what you're wondering, although there was a group of hatchlings clambering all over it at one point. It even docks on continents occasionally.

[Giant elephants. Why does that sound vaguely familiar? There are one or two eastern beliefs regarding giant elephants and the creation of the world, if Skulduggery remembers correctly.]
venivicivetinari: (Default)

[personal profile] venivicivetinari 2015-03-24 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[And here was a turning-point. It's almost a sixth sense to know when someone's trying to probe for information, although granted Havelock doesn't usually need to rely on it more than he relies on visual cues. Skeletons, unfortunately, don't have many of those, and that makes an intelligent skeleton both dangerous and intriguing.

[The turning-point was: should Havelock continue this particular conversation, or should he continue to gather information from the marketplace which, while vastly cleaner and of better quality than Ankh-Morpork's, housed generally the same level of wit? Or, more to the point, does he want to pass up the opportunity to have a conversation with someone who is, in fact, having the same conversation?

[Havelock isn't in the habit of dismissing circumstances so rare they ought to be put in a museum.]

We're in an ocean.

[It's not a question. It's almost surprise; hardly worth noticing. Havelock already has the distinct impression the skeleton is going to notice it. How many giant turtles have actually swum in an ocean?]

I suppose it does make some sense, until they're old enough to house their own continents. Does that make the one bearing the ocean in which we swim its parent?

[He doesn't exactly watch the skeleton's face, because there isn't one, but he is watching for physical cues. Such as they are.]

Arya Stark | A Song of Ice and Fire | Spoilers for A Dance With Dragons

[personal profile] braavosi 2015-03-24 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
[A - Wandering through the market]

[She's not dressed like the kedan. Her rags are warm, thankfully, but they set her apart from the others around her, mark her as a Foreigner. Her hair is shorn close in the style of beggars and mummers and there's a stick in one of her hands, slightly taller than she is and wrapped with leather just below the top. It's not as good as having eyes (no matter what the waif had tried to tell her) but she's grateful for it now, navigating this city that smells and sounds so alien.

She doesn't have the steps to this city memorized, can't tell which district she's in by the smell of it. Still, if this is a test, she'll find a way to pass it. She will not give in.

At some point while weaving through the crowd in what she assumes to be a market of sorts, something distracts her. A shopkeeper shouting, a strange smell she's never encountered before. Either way, it diverts her attention just long enough that she bumps into the person in front of her quite by accident. She ducks her head, backs up a step.

Small blind girl bumps into you, what do.]

Sorry, I'm sorry.

[B - Begging]

[There are other beggars in the city--she's been here long enough now to have discovered that. Her bowl had been tucked into her rags when she'd awakened in the city, so why not put it to use? It may earn her some coin, and if nothing else it'll afford her the opportunity to sit quietly, forgotten, and listen.

It's amazing what one can hear when people think no one is listening, and she is no one.

There's a small blind girl in rags, maybe ten, maybe twelve, sitting along the edge of a random busy street with a beggar's bowl in front of her. Spare a few juulan?]

[C - Choose your own adventure!]

[the man is a lot more solid than someone of his size has a right to be. Through clothing and without sight, his build could almost be mistaken for bony, without much fat. If one wasn't observant.]

It's fine.

[Thanks to his grandfather, Zel is used to the blind. Not that he won't check his purse later, because Zel is a suspicious man, but he'll hold off.]

New arrival?
braavosi: (I don't want this)

[personal profile] braavosi 2015-03-24 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah, but everything in her life is about observation these days. Aside from the lessons on poisons, the majority of what the kindly man and the waif have been teaching her is about noticing details, using all of her senses. It's the very reason she's currently blind.

Of course noticing that the man she's bumped into is unnaturally solid and knowing what to do with that information are two different things. For a second she wavers, then nods.]

Yes. I don't know my way around just yet.
gathersnomoss: (thinking)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2015-03-27 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
It can be a warren even for people who have been here a while. You can tell the sectors apart pretty easily, though.

[Zel is studying the kid a bit]

Can you use a map?
braavosi: (must be for real)

[personal profile] braavosi 2015-03-27 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Do I look like I can use a map?

[It comes out a bit more snappish than it should have, but for all that she tries to live up to the expectations placed on her, tries to be thoughtful and clever, sometimes she's still only eleven years old and mouthy. Hopefully this man, whoever he is, isn't the violent sort.

She bites her lip, half expecting to get backhanded, and shakes her head.]

I'll learn it, I've done it before. I just haven't had time yet.
gathersnomoss: (Default)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2015-03-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
You can't see a map. That's different from knowing how to use it if you could tell what's on it.
strokeofgenis: (wtf?)

B

[personal profile] strokeofgenis 2015-03-24 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
[For a short while, Genis has no knowledge of the poor girl in the street. He just knows about the fact that he's trying to buy some nice ingredients for some cooking that he intends to do, and suddenly the price is way higher than it has any right to be. He sounds pretty angry, voice raised and waging his fist in the air.]

What? You think 30 juulan for a potato is a fair price? You sell these for 30 a half dozen for everyone else? Don't you know that these are for my boss... who's one of you guys?

[There's a strong emphasis on the last bit, as if he's denoting a fine difference between kedan and foreigners.]

Fine. I'll just take my business elsewhere! And don't you worry; I'll be telling my boss about this.

[Yeah fine, he'll keep his precious juulan for a little bit. But he starts wandering away from the shop, looking for someone else to round out his grocery list, and that's when he sees the young girl... or is it young boy? He can't really tell.]

I hope you're having better luck garnering some sympathy from these guys. Cause I'm sure not getting much.
braavosi: (that I'm sinking in)

[personal profile] braavosi 2015-03-27 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
[She listens to the exchange impassively, caring little for the politics of this strange new city yet still waiting for any important pieces of information to drop. Names, factions, plans. Anything that she might report back to the kindly man as one of her three new pieces of knowledge, because if--when--she manages to make her way back to Braavos, assuming they don't bar her from the House (and the thought of that makes her heart drop to the pit of her stomach, so she swallows and forces herself to focus on the conversation instead), she'll probably still be expected to report her findings.

Yes, you made it back. What three things do you know that you did not know before?

But there are no names, nothing but a foreign currency she's never heard of and something about you guys. Nobles? A different people altogether? It's hard to tell without eyes.

In reaction to the boy she reaches softly for the bowl in front of her and gives it a gentle shake, listening to the sound of a few coins clinking together. She shrugs.]

Maybe you're doing it wrong.

[She sets the bowl back down.]

Your boss sounds very important.

[It's a risk, letting someone know she's been eavesdropping, but it seems harmless enough. It's not as if she has any names to go on.]
strokeofgenis: (ack!)

[personal profile] strokeofgenis 2015-03-27 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you heard that, huh?

[Yeah, Genis hadn't exactly been quiet in the whole exchange, had he? He promised his sister he'd be good, but that temper of his, once it flared, he was liable to take someone out with fire... literal fire.

[Genis sighs a bit at that.]

I don't know if you'd say he's important. Maoxa isn't exactly anyone big in this down. He's just the guy who runs the restaurant I work at.

[He looks down at the bowl of coins she's holding, and there's a bit of sadness in his eyes. And so he'll actually take a few juulan and drop them in the bowl.]

You don't look like a kedan. You new here?
braavosi: (must be for real)

[personal profile] braavosi 2015-03-28 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
[There's that word again, kedan. For a fleeting moment she wishes she still had her eyesight, to see what exactly these kedan are supposed to be. Is it just a word or are they actually different, the way you instantly know a Tyroshi or a Dothraki?

She nods.]

Yes. I fell asleep in Braavos and I woke up here.

[And what a terrifying, confusing mess of a day that had been. She doesn't even want to think about it. It might even be giving away too much to tell this boy what she has, if this truly is all part of some test, but apparently waking up in Keeliai isn't as unique an experience as one would expect. In fact, judging by that little talk he'd been having with the merchant:]

Did you wake up here too?
strokeofgenis: (ugh!)

[personal profile] strokeofgenis 2015-03-28 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's one way of putting it.

[Genis speaks practically conversationally, as if he's not weirded out by the story she's telling or that it's weird at all. The world still is weird, don't get him wrong, but at least her story isn't weird.]

My friends and I had just finished a several-month long journey throughout our world, and we were about ready to finally go home when suddenly, a few weeks ago, I woke up to find that I'm at this city's university. And to find that my sister, who was with me minutes earlier, had already been here for two years.

[It still doesn't make much sense to him, all things considered.]

I'm Genis, by the way.
stonebird: (❅ did it ask a crumb of me)

ARYA! <333 (B)

[personal profile] stonebird 2015-03-24 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
(Beggars tug at her heart. She doesn't like seeing anyone in such desperate need. Usually, she will spare what she can - whether it be juulan, a blanket or food - however, as she approaches this beggar, she feels a strange ache in her chest. Her hair is slowly but surely returning to its auburn shade - she hasn't been able to acquire dye - but she is Alayne in this city nonetheless.

It's safer that way.

Yet she can quickly see her plan caving in on itself as she gets a good look at this beggar's face.)

How long have you - (Her voice sounds strange to her ears. It's tight and scared.) What is your name?
braavosi: (I'll never forget where you're at)

[personal profile] braavosi 2015-03-27 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
[She can't place the voice right away but there's something achingly, annoyingly familiar about it, even pinched as it is. Something that evokes old memories, images of Winterfell, images best left buried and forgotten. Everyone from Winterfell is dead anyway. Everyone except Jon Snow, and he's at the Wall.

It's the stress of finding herself in a new city without warning, she decides. It's playing tricks on her mind (and her ears).

She turns her face toward the sound of the girl's voice, grey eyes seeing nothing. That the girl--whoever she is--is afraid is evident, but why should she fear a beggar on the street? A small, blind beggar at that? She cocks her head at an angle, curious.]

Beth.

[The name rolls off her tongue easily, as so many others have before it.]

Does it matter? Most people don't care what my name is.
stonebird: (❅ another on the roof)

[personal profile] stonebird 2015-03-28 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
(Beth? No. Beth isn't the right name! Alayne - no, Sansa - beholds the unseeing eyes and feels her heart race. Between one breath and the next, she kneels down and shakily brushes the dark hair out of Arya's face.)

...Arya? Don't you know me? (Her voice is now hushed.) I'm...called Alayne Stone here.

(And back in Westeros, but that includes a long story.)

What happened to your eyes?
braavosi: (I'm alone all the time)

[personal profile] braavosi 2015-03-29 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Sansa.

The realization--that voice--is so sudden that she forgets to breathe for a long moment. Her heart pounds, and the blood rushing through her ears drowns out the last question. It doesn't matter anyway. This can't be Sansa. Sansa is gone. If the girl knows that name, Arya, then this is some new part of the test, some new trick--

She snaps a hand out to catch the one brushing at her hair.]

Don't call me that. I don't have a name, I'm no one. Who are you?

[The words are coming faster, pouring out before she can stop them.]

How do you know what her voice sounded like? Who are you?
stonebird: (❅ he did not know I saw)

[personal profile] stonebird 2015-04-11 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
(The violent reaction worries her even more. Time has changed her and where she would have responded to Arya's outburst with anger, she instead responds calmly. Or, at least, with outward calmness.)

It's me. Sansa. I...got away. Littlefinger helped me escape and I was staying in the Eyrie.

(Tears sting her eyes and she wants to pull the younger girl into a tight hug, but she knows Arya can pack a punch.)

I didn't kill Joffrey, though I wanted to. He deserved it for everything he did to us.

[A new Foreigner probably in his thirties is quite cheerfully sauntering through the marketplace, his hands in his pockets and his posture at odds with the probably-military uniform he wears. He looks genial enough, but his eyes are sharp behind his glasses, and he's already casually sidestepped a pickpocket, carrying the motion into a simple turn aside to bend over a merchant's wares. Completely coincidental. Really.]

[After a moment of entirely serious contemplation:] ...no, I'm afraid I simply don't have any of the local currency on hand. It's a shame, really. I'm sorry to have wasted your time.

---

2;

[Rampaging monster? Rampaging monster. Jade isn't sure exactly what it is, and he's a little short on magic lenses, but the general panic of the locals in the area tells him that perhaps this is not typical behavior for the scaly quadruped. With that in mind, he heads that way quite calmly, aiming to put himself between civilians and monster problem. This, at least, is a situation for which he has a reasonable response.]

[Granted, that reasonable response is to pull a short spear out of -- apparently -- nowhere in a brief flash of light, and menace the kirin with it. His motions are calculated first to turn it away from anyone who doesn't look like they can take a hit, then to incapacitate it by decommissioning one or more of its legs, but the former is slightly more important.]
